I'm not dissing on non-human characters or anything but if you're saying that people who make their characters human or appear human lack a "creative mind" then you're pretty darn wrong. In fact the argument could go both ways and it could be said that creating a unique character within such a limited and grounded set of rules for what humans do and don't look like is even more difficult and therefore, more impressive. You stick a bird with red feathers and a wizard hat into a crowd, of course they're distinguishable. You stick a human into a crowd and are still able to recognize them individually, that's a bit more impressive.
Last part of that does not necessarily represent my opinion. Just throwing it out there.
