It's extremely noticeable when the symptoms start, but as soon as that happens, it's already too late. It's also very easy to die from rabies. It doesn't happen a whole lot in the US and in the developed world because we vaccinate for it a lot.

The symptoms appear when vaccination is still effective. Not very many people are actually ever vaccinated for rabies, as it is an extremely painful set of shots deep into the stomach. However if you develop symptoms and go to a doctor, you can be cured as long as you don't wait too long.
