Author Topic: Windows 8 Died at Launch, Microsoft Moves on to Windows 9  (Read 4433 times)

i was gonna say "what about windows 2000" but apparently that's just before ME

actually what about WINDOWS 1.0 and then WINDOWS 2.x which is a lot like 1.0?
and then 95 and 98 which are two good ones in a row... and if 2000 is good then that makes three

Windows 95 and 98 are the non-canon bastard spawn that led to the Windows ME fiasco. Everything from Windows XP and on has been the mainline version and based on the work of the Windows NT kernel which 95,98, and ME were not.

I don't follow.

Every version of windows follows a pattern where Microsoft releases a terrible operating system and then one that was even better than the best one. Think about it. Windows ME: terrible. Windows XP: Great. Windows Vista: Terrible. Windows 7: Great. Windows 8: terrible. Windows 9: ???
only problem is windows 8.1 is amazing.

In the 90s there were two branches of Windows being developed which had rather different internals. The Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and ME line were more focused towards consumer use, were a 16/32 bit system, and based on MS-DOS. The other branch went under the Windows NT designation and included NT 3.1, NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 (5.0). These were originally developed for business and server use in mind. NT was not based on the MS-DOS architecture and at the time was designed to be an exclusively 32-bit system.

After the utter failure and public backlash from the release of Windows ME, and for other technical reasons, that branch of Windows development ceased and every version from XP onward was based on the development of the NT line.

Fun history lessons aside that's why I called the Windows 9x line non-canon lol.

any branch of windows 8 is unfortunately not very good
maybe it's amazing compared to the original product
but considering the original product was designed for touch screen computers among other things

Are you loving Srs. I'm not going to buy windows 9.

I haven't actually paid for a Windows OS ever. Windows 2000 and XP I had when my parents paid for my PC and I remember getting like 10 copies of Vista ultimate through that old web game service from Microsoft that was insanely easy to exploit. Then I got "free" copies of all Microsoft software once I started university and now have access to BizSpark from work.

I love 8.1
Ya I've never had much problem with 8 or any of the other versions. The only occasional problems I experience are a result of third parties writing wonky-ass buggy broken software rather than the OS itself.

Did Windows 8 actually 'die'? I mean I know they got some backlash about the start menu, but I thought stuff had cooled down and people are fine with it now.

I beg to differ. I have to ask, do you use windows 8 or 8.1 frequently?

Fun history lessons aside that's why I called the Windows 9x line non-canon lol.

I know all that, but... I'm still not getting why you call it non-canon, whatever that means for a line of operating systems...
Maybe it would be some kind of retcon. (like, originally developed based on MS-DOS before the NT line took over and became the new canon? I have no idea.)

It didn't really die, people just can't handle change on the internet.
I like the changes they made.

it's much easier in 8.1. I dont see why they are making windows 9 when they can make 8.2 lol

Windows 8 got too much bad press for it to ever be like xp or 7, The damage is done.
