Author Topic: Badspot shutting down v20 servers  (Read 5077 times)

I am aware that Badspot will shut down your server if you host it in v20. But why? They're
just enjoying the game in their own way. If this has been explained before, can you link me to it?

I figure the main issue is just the fact that it creates broken entries on the master server. Unfortunately there's no way to avoid this unless you truly know what you are doing so I'd just stick to playing single player in V20.

Have keys been revolked for hosting V20 servers?

would
function webcom_postserver() {}
work?

Yes except you won't be able to replace the function because it's protected, and I don't recommend finding ways to bypass the protection either. It's protected for a reason.

i've been noticing this too

I don't believe this happens unless you are using a script to send fake version info.

Otherwise, they won't even show up on the master server.

doesnt it crash your client when you join a v20 server with v21?

Running the old version fragments the userbase and leads to unjoinable entries in the master server creating a public nuisance.  Also, running executables posted by random forum jerks is a bad idea.

(fake date)

I honestly don't see why posting v20 servers is a problem.
Like, a user sees my v20 server, doesn't know it's v20, and gets an error. So what? They can find other servers.

(Also I am in no way saying that I do this, it's just an example)

Old versions don't even appear on the master server without a hack to send fake version info. And even once that's done, it's not much any more harmful than the Bluzone, []----[]'s Join to be Auto-Banned, or any password-ed build server. That's right. Even without v20 players, we still have plenty of unjoinable entries in the master server.

The second of Badspot's arguments is that it fragments the community. What the hell? This isn't the v0002 to Retail Release all over again. It's an update that sacrificed gameplay features for a graphical update. It's not their fault for missing the old gameplay features. None of them are dedicated v20 players. Literally all of them still regularly play v21. They mess around in v20 for the nostalgia factor of seeing their old maps again. They are still in frequent contact with the rest of the community and typically play the newer versions.

The third of arguments is that you shouldn't download executables from random people. Badspot is totally correct on this one. But it's not Badspot's job to police this sort of thing when it's the user's fault for downloading random junk they found on the internet. It's a computer for christ's sake. They own the property and if they decide to totally screw it over, none of us have any say.

[]----[]'s Join to be Auto-Banned
This server is joinable, though.

you instantly get booted from it, so no.

Not everyone does, though. It's funnier than passwording it, bans are only 60 minutes, you're warned, and it's funny.
