Author Topic: Need advice for laptop purchase.  (Read 591 times)

My friend is leaving for college in a few weeks and has no laptop.
He says he can drop $500 or maybe $550 at most, but needs it asap.

We need it to be windows, have a good size hdd, be fast and good enough for very basic games and video, and be acceptable for fruity loops and audacity type programs. We will be using it for making music and videos a lot.

So yeah any suggestions would be much appreciated.

500 isn't really a lot for a decent laptop...

Why can't he spend more?

$800 dollars is my budget for laptops.

this
you won't find much good stuff for only around $500

it's hard to make a desktop for $400-$500, and since laptops are basically double the price of desktops you'd need at least an $800 budget for a decent one

if you want something that can keep up with todays standard you must be willing to drop over a grand.

my laptop was 1 grand. things not capable of keeping up with new games anymore

The cost of a good laptop is double that of a good desktop, except it takes half the time to become out of date.
better to go all out when buying a laptop.

not everyone is ridiculously rich
Uh when I was going not college I was getting around $500 a paycheck, which is his budget. It's really not a lot of money for someone that age.

lol I don't use my laptop for playing games. I really only use it with my pioneer deck, serato, and a launch pad.

For music related stuff, you'll need a massive hard drive. Otherwise all I can say is a good processor and a decent amount of ram. I have a dual core at 2.9ghz and 4gb of ram, and I've had absolutely no problems running fruity loops etc. However, the one problem I do have is that I've only got a 300gb hard drive and I have around 10gb free. Samples take up a lot space, seeing as with games and stuff I'd never ran over 100gb of space.

My friend picked up a laptop for €350 second hand with 8gb of ram and an i3, and he uses his laptop for music. Albeit a small screen, he's had no problems and only uses his laptop for music. So $500 is definitely possible. Look on ebay and amazon and stuff.

Also you're US so try newegg. Low delivery costs.
