I always said that the puppet is the kid who got killed in this death minigame outside of the original "Fredbear's Family Diner".
And then later when the five kids in this death minigame were killed, the puppet (the first dead kid) gave them new "life" in this minigame by helping them control the five older animatronics that were at the second building.

The puppet is the original kid who was killed at the first building. (as evidenced by the body having the puppet's tear stains) The other five kids who died at the second building (during FNAF 2) were the animatronics that were in FNAF 1. (as evidenced by the puppet putting the animatronic heads on the bodies of the other five kids)

The puppet is the original kid who was killed at the first building. The other five kids who died at the second building (during FNAF 2) were the animatronics that were in FNAF 1.

And then the Puppet gave them "life" and I guess they wanted revenge on the guy who killed them, a security guard. (not actually you, but I guess they think you're close enough to the actual killer)

I think the killer killed the children and stuffed them in the suits, but the Puppet enabled them to control the animatronics from beyond the grave.

Oh and there's a new Game Theory that I think sums this up nicely.

Exactly. As long as the Puppet is there, the animatronics will try to kill people at night.

And in the day, the Puppet just makes them stare menacingly at adults.

And when shadow freddy is brightened, you can see that he's looking into the camera.
