Think of it this way: A scary movie with a psycho killer, and you want the killer to not be relateable so that he seems less human and more like a monster.

A victim is about to be murdered. She asks "Why are you doing this??".
It would be better for him to stay silent and cold than to say "You killed my cousin in a car accident".
