Author Topic: lets talk about moral quandries  (Read 4970 times)

A moral quandary is a problem in which you have to make a difficult decision in which nothing stands out as the "right" answer.

I love these. I despise movies that have characters that are just evil for the sake of being evil. I like decisions that are morally grey, and difficult. Black and white decisions are just a test of personality.

Answer these, and post your own:
You are legally immune in all these situations, and people will agree with whatever you do.

You can bring peace on Earth, and make all men happy, excluding yourself. In order to do this, you have to torture and kill a young girl.
Do you do it? You could save millions of lives by ending violence.
Edit: It will not prevent you from being happy, it will just not force you into happiness.

A madman has planted bombs all over New York city. He has been captured, but will not reveal where he has placed the bomb. He has a rare condition so he does not feel pain, and the only way to get the locations of the bombs is to torture his (innocent) wife.
Do you do it? You could save thousands of lives, and nobody would die.

A small train is coming down a track. 5 people are tied to it, and will be killed by the train. You are on a bridge with a large burly man, and his body could stop the train, saving the 5 people. Do you push him off the bridge, to stop the train? You could save 5 people, at the cost of 1.

first question: if it does not make me happy what's the point
second question: yes, the bitch has it coming
third question: sure actually no because i would get arrested for killing someone

cloverfield imo is one of the best uh
hypothetical situations for this sorta thing

like
you're a military commander of some sort (probably the president of the united states because of the sheer scale of the decision)
and there's this big monster messing everything in NYC up. the monster even released a ton of little small monsters (small, relative to the big monster, they're about the size of dogs) that kill people directly OR if that isn't possible, their bites will kill you soon after you're bitten
so the big monster's ruining literally everyone's day PLUS they've got all their itty bitty parasites ruining even more days

and now you have to make a choice

choice one: do nothing. the monster and all its little buddies could get tired or whatever, maybe they would simply accomplish whatever they came for, who knows. but they leave. this means that only the people they killed die. nobody else has to have anything happen to them, and other than the loss of the people who are already gone there will be no permanent problems

or choice two: use a nuclear weapon. no smaller weapon is possible; you've tried plenty on the monster and they didn't work, not to mention the fact that they won't be able to get rid of all the parasites. this will GUARANTEE the loss of every single person left in the city as well as many others, and the area will remain uninhabitable for decades or even longer. not to mention the climate issues and the other non-immediate effects it would have on the area around it

so what do you do??

why not authorize every nuclear-armed nation fire a nuclear missile at once at the monster

why not authorize every nuclear-armed nation fire a nuclear missile at once at the monster
because that would be the single most ridiculous example of overkill in the history of the earth

Logically you'd save more by just letting the monsters leave. They couldn't kill everyone in the city, but a nuclear weapon would.

because that would be the single most ridiculous example of overkill in the history of the earth
it would look cool though

then again nuking ANY part of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is the worst decision ever

then again nuking ANY part of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is the worst decision ever

a monster isn't part of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Logically you'd save more by just letting the monsters leave. They couldn't kill everyone in the city, but a nuclear weapon would.
but the issue with that is it's uncertain whether they will leave or if they do, when they will
a monster isn't part of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
do you think a nuclear detonation is gonna magically only affect the monster and none of its surroundings?

then again nuking ANY part of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is the worst decision ever
...how do you think trinity happened

...how do you think trinity happened
project trinity WAS the worst decision ever though

you think a nuclear detonation is gonna magically only affect the monster and none of its surroundings?
on the bright side, rebuilding the city would create tons of new jobs to spur the economy

I wouldn't take the chance of them reproducing and wiping out all of America, so nuke

project trinity WAS the worst decision ever though
it revolutionized the world tho
