I know there are programs to add a start menu. My favorite is Start Menu 8 by IObit.

However, I am criticizing the operating system itself. Outside programs don't count.

ofc that means that HAVING A SEARCH BAR ONLY IS OK BECAUSE LISTS ARE TEDIOUS ANYWAY I GOT YOU, YOU FAKE HEDGEHOG
I was mainly complaining that while the fullscreen start menu has the same functionality as the old one, it takes up too much screen space, is akward to use with a mouse, and is completely unneeded when using a mouse and keyboard. I see how it can be a good thing for tablets and touch screen computers, but it's stuff on a desktop.

And I see what you're saying with the whole search bar thing. Ubuntu does this with the dash menu where everything revolves around the search bar there. However, it's filled with amazon and stuff that no one wants in an applications menu.

(Unless you dont have the money which I understand) Why dont you just get Windows 8.1

Linux and Unix in general is bad for gaming.
However, Steam is pushing towards Linux as a gaming platform by encouraging developers to add Linux compatibility.

The only reason you would say that is because like 0.000000001% of the population uses linux. If Linux had as much support and programs and developers as windows did, i would be using it. Same maybe for a mac, but those are just complete lockdowns, so not sure on that.

big triple A title makers arent going to waste their time with linux just because steam let them. not enough of a market. waste of time and money.

Wait till 30th September and see what's happening with Windows 9.
(Or windows threshold as i believe it's called)

Okay, I loving love that.

That looks awesome.

The reason why I mentioned Steam pushing towards Linux is because of the upcoming Steam OS.

akward to use with a mouse
If you are opening programs with a mouse then something is wrong. Ever since Windows 8 I have realized that the start menu was only slowing me down.

don't upgrade from XP to 8.1
xp is better
so is MS-DOS

I agree with this, I just got a new laptop (one of my first PC's) and I hate Windows, honestly everything is unorganized and you don't know what you're doing. Not to mention, everything takes a long time, and has to be treated way too delicately. I had XP when I was younger, and it was alright but OSx of any sort tops everything. Also I hate Windows 8 so much (using it right now)

kool kids klubkool kids klubkk

Mac OS X is good for some things and bad at others.
I'm just going to leave it at that before someone gets mad.

EDIT: What happened to the Windows megathread? We should bump that instead of continuing to post here.

Only thing that Mac's aren't the best for are games. I'm not a big gamer though, so I don't mind. I've been able to play games that I enjoy on my Mac (Blockland, Subrosa, and Cities XL). There is way too much Microsoft PC elitism on the forums. I bet you it's because Mac's usually are more costly.

God damn it.

Okay, so here's why I dislike Mac OS X.
1. It's a Unix operating system where you cannot change the desktop environment without modifying the system.
2. It's only distributed with specific hardware which sucks.
3. I'm too used to what I'm already using.
4. You have to enable "developer mode" in order to install tarballs.
5. The forgetin keyboard layoutfffff.

To balance that out here are some good things about it.
1. Vim, Top, emacs, and other command line programs are pre-installed.
2. The ease of use and workspace system is great.
3. Everything is where you expect it to be.
4. It's generally more supported that Linux/Unix.

This is better than windows 7 button menu. I'm being completely serious. Plus who loving uses the start menu shortcuts anyways? If I need to search for something drag my mouse to top right or hit windowskey + S

Windows 8.1 is way loving better than 7. Also if you want to be fully desktop only then do this.

Rightclick taskbar
Properties
Navigation
Check [] Show my desktop on start
tadaa

Go home microsoft, you're drunk
