google into ways of tracing the attack, to see how serious it is

Are you serious? If someone is going to attack a server odds are they're going to use a multitude of spoofed ip addresses that don't exist and overload one's download limit, and if they're using their own router, then they're more than likely hidden behind a mirror. You can't just Google a way to trace them.

back on topic, the thing I would do is watch the console for unusual pings and packets coming in huge loads lol,  it usually means you're being ddos'ed.

hopefully if you are getting attacked, you find out who the attacker is soon.
a vpn or a change of the IP might help, too.

That's the point, you can see, if they are using a a few powerful computers or a large botnet. If the latter is true, call the police.
