someone get the biggest "YES" gif they can find and PM it to me because this is exactly what i mean
update: i got it

The reason we no longer use DTS shapes for bricks that allowed the editor wand to work is that they are terrible performance wise. The way bricks work now does not permit such dynamic reshaping of them.

But what if the editor just used a bunch of 1x1 "ghost bricks" (and you could highlight multiple faces at a time for quick wall movement like in P2), and then when you decided to actually build the map, it
places the ones we work with in as efficient manner as possible.
It would be very difficult but not impossible.

true facts: this building method was static shapes

the horror

creating structures from static shapes is just as bad an idea now as it was in v0002, no matter what nostalgic tunnel vision you look through [edit: ignore that appendage if you like, i don't want to devalue other people's opinions or disregard them as childish wonder]. the drawbacks are still there, and they're still real. i know it's just one guy with a neat little polished-up loader right now, and i don't think we're automatically going to devolve back, but it will happen if we let it. the major issue is that people miss maps enough to sacrifice actual progress in exchange for what feels like progress, and no matter what way you look at it, static shape building is the opposite of progress.

yeah maps were great and it's a shame we don't have them any more but look forward, not back. find ways to make what we have more usable or make new ways to use them. don't just throw your hands up and quit or try and cling onto what we've deliberately abandoned

i guess a lot of people will think i'm being a jerk, or stupid, or what have you, but this is absolutely not the way to move the game forward. these are fairly significant steps backward.

What progress?   The progress we've got so far were maps taken away, then shaders(steam), minor updates were bots and v21 slates (environments) all in 4 years (most of this happened ranging from a year to a year and a half. Don't say hats are progress, they have not been made yet and we don't even know if it will be compatable according to Rotondo or if this will be the only update in a while (so not getting my hope up).

Upgrading from Static Shape raw shape loading to fxdts brick building was one of the biggest progress to the game right up there with making events default. Without it, we wouldn't have nearly as many options and tools as we do now. Please get educated before trashing development of the game.

You say that like the only thing the new update they're working on is hats.

This is wrong.

It is more than hats, hence the statement a while ago that it was compatibility breaking.

At least, I believe this is true.

The topic is way too old to quote, but can be reached with some simple use of the search function.

I'll go prowling for it in a moment, if you are unable to.

Sorry for the double post but I did some digging anyway:

Read this link:

Since the topic is too old for me to quote him directly.

I'm honestly glad Rotondo confirmed it, but they should really take their time with it. Besides, they really don't owe us anything, really.

Either way, TF2 + Blockland, oh my jeebus.

^that was a joke.

Click that link in my quote.

You got to think about this, there are several community made mods that add hats, correct?
You would think that adding hats can be done without affecting compatibility, yes?

That is why I believe they are adding more than hats in this supposed update.

But to be fair, I'm fine with the game as it is, without terrain.

I agree with you to an extent, however I'm not talking about what one views as past progress or what future progress is most worthwhile. The point I'm trying to make is that static shapes are not progress by any abstraction or interpretation of the word. Maybe they're personal progress for the developer of the tools in maps, but they certainly do not count as progress for the game as a whole. I'm not talking about the developer team here (i've said my opinion on this matter before, but it's not relevant), this is about how this community will collectively move the game forward with our contributions.

somebody, probably Truce, made a brick optimization diddly a long time ago but as far as i know it was never released
wut?
