Author Topic: I worked at EB Expo, AMA.  (Read 1981 times)

I know this is a bit ridiculous but, I got to play a lot of games and talk to a lot of people. I'm almost ready to just collapse, so go ahead and ask me what different games are like or other stuff.

Games I played/watched the live demo for (that I remember) list:
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • Sunset Overdrive
  • Halo: Master Chief Collection
  • The Evil Within
  • Bloodbourne
  • Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Assassin's Creed Rogue
  • The Crew
  • Far Cry 4
  • The Division
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
  • Evolve
  • The Order: 1886
  • Alien: Isolation
  • LEGO Batman 3
  • Dying Light
  • The Witcher 3
  • Driveclub
  • Project Cars
  • Kingdom Hearts 2 HD Remix

I believe there's more, but right now I'm really focusing on trying to make myself dinner without spilling it all over the floor after falling down due to tiredness...

Was there the new CoD?
Sorry, but what is this Expo? I don't know if it's PC or console or wha...

Oh, also. You got a job! Yay!

Was there the new CoD?
Yes, they had Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (not sure if that's what you mean by new, but it's not released here yet so...). If I'm honest, I actually kinda had fun with it. I mean, it would get really boring fast, but playing with a group of friends right next to me was a novel way to spend 10 minutes.

There's a new game mode called "Uplink" where you have to take a ball and either throw it or throw yourself and it (jump into) this big sphere in the middle of the map. It's actually kind of fun, and I managed to score 19 points, a team mate scored 1 and the other team got 0. You can bet the other team were not too happy after that.

tl;dr it's alright for a short time, not sure about single player, probably wouldn't buy it for full price.

Sorry for the long explanation, but here's the gist of things;

EB Games is an Australian (and I think New Zealand) games retailer which is owned by GameStop. Since a few years ago, they've decided to start their own games convention called "EB Expo". Unlike most events, EB Expo is designed almost entirely for the public to try out the games alongside the media. It goes for 3 days; Friday and Saturday are both split into 2 parts each (Friday Daylight, Friday Twilight, Saturday Daylight, Saturday Twilight) with a 1 hour break in between, and the entire day lasts between 9AM and 9:30PM, and then Sunday goes between 9AM and 4PM in one big section.

As it turns out, EB Games/GameStop (in Australia) makes the majority of their profit over those 3 days. Everything from the tickets, the merchandise sales, preorders, exhibitor fees, SELLING VESTS FOR $25 (which you need to stay back after 5PM on the Sunday) and so on nets them incredible amounts of profit. Originally it was in QLD, where EB Game's HQ is, but as of 2012 it moved to NSW and will hopefully stay here.

I've worked 2 EB Expos so far, both of them with Ubisoft as a PR rep.

How was Halo 2 Anniversary
(Taking the time now to remind everyone that everything I say in this thread represents my opinion and my opinion alone)

There wasn't an FPS counter, but by appearance it seemed to be doing a constant 60FPS.

I don't like how they integrated load-outs in the Halo 2 multiplayer. They should have stuck to the completely classic experience by default. That said, gameplay is still as fun as Halo can be.

Really though, I'd only recommend it to die-hard Halo fans. There's just too many other shooters right now that have better gameplay, but seeing Halo in HD (I think, not sure if it was 720p or 1080p) made for a damn good nostalgia shock.

I think i heard that there is, or will be, a classic mode that doesn' have loadouts and has the orignal hud positioning or something

Well, if that happens, it will certainly be better.

how were sunset overdrive, borderlands and kigdom hearts?

Sunset Overdrive was the one game I was super excited for. After playing it, I'm a bit disappointed. We played a multiplayer demo where you had to defend some generators from a few waves of enemies. They key to winning is apparently constantly grinding, although there were times the grind rails didn't really work out as well as I hoped. It also lacks a double jump and some of the weapons are piss poor. I mean, it's not terrible, but it could have certainly been better.

Just imagine a bit of Ratchet & Clank combined with Sunkist and Left 4 Dead, but lacking polish.[/li][/list]

As for Borderlands and Kingdom Hearts; more of the same. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I actually think they were both quite fun and I'd be willing to get them. They're both very beautiful and Borderland's humour is as funny as ever, so if you're longing for more BL or KH, save up now. That said, I don't know if they're really for complete beginners to their individual franchises, they seem to both rely (at least in the demos) on you knowing a bit about the previous games. So, new players should probably get BL2 and KH 1 HD Remix respectively.

Mm, how was the Witcher 3? From what I've seen so far it looks like it's going to be good, but I'd like to hear about how the gameplay handles.

Unfortunately it was an off-hands demo, but watching the guy play it live, it was loving awesome. Even in what they're calling alpha state it runs smoothly and there's a heap of brilliant gameplay options to go with. Lots of tactical decisions to make, and combat is both brutal and satisfying. At least, it looked like it would be.

I was really lucky; I was in one of the few groups that got to see the PC version going through Novigrad. Apparently they could only show it off every once and again because it causes the PC to overheat badly. Anyways, city looked massive and beautiful. The NPCs seemed to be fairly dynamic and already have a wide range to say and do; I was pretty impressed when I saw the range of idle animations for the guards.

So, I think I might be onboard The Witcher 3 hype train.

how inferior was aw to tittyfall

720p is good enough for me, the TV that I have my Xbone hooked up to that only goes up that high.

does FC4 compare to FC3?

what are the major changes?
