Author Topic: Is Windows 8.1 a good upgrade?  (Read 3108 times)

Do we know if 8.1 owners get 10 for a discount?

I thought maybe I've read somewhere that 10 is gonna be free for 8.1 users...?

If that's the case then I've gone from 7 to 10 completely for free, lol.

I guess not really since I had to pay my university thousands of dollars...

I heard they were dropping support for windows 7 soon too, might want to look into that as well.
Nope, vista is getting the cut and soon after 7.
Yeah okay forget them.
Clarification: Windows 7 mainstream support ends. http://support2.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy

This means that there will be no design changes, feature requests, warranty claims, no-charge incident support, and there will be limited non-security hotfix support. Windows 7 will continue to receive security updates (most notably) until 2020. Vista mainstream support has already ended, and extended support will end in 2017.

Well I like it, and if you really feel the need to have the start menu, you can always get startisback as its the only of the many start menus that don't need to have an extra program running.

I honestly like it very much, it was a bit of a learning curve when you first start, but its one of those things that you get to learn easily.

The attachment is what my desktop currently looks like, only mods I used where Aero Glass, Windows 10 Desktop icons, and Metro Taskbar Icons, Rainmeter doesn't count as its a program but I did have to mod the meter...

NOTE:If you buy a copy of 8, prepare yourself for massive updates, and then you have to get 8.1 from the appstore.

Save yourself from this buy just buying 8.1 instead of 8.
Can you tell me what theme that is for rainmeter? i would loving admire you forever

My computer just forced me to update to 8.1. It's not that much different so far.

Oh god it is NOT a good upgrade. Not sure if you'd like it from Win 7 to Win 8.1; but if you did it like I did, being Win 8 to Win 8.1, all it did was add a crud-ton of glitches and bugs. It broke about half of my games, and making a quarter 2x laggier than before. I'd suggest not getting it, get Windows 8. At least there are workarounds for it. If you do get it, try out Classic Shell. It's free and adds a start menu that functions exactly like Windows 7.

Actually, no it doesn't break anything, unless you decide to copy all your files from program files and shove them back where they were, then yea that might break some stuff
i'd advise you to just clean install and reinstall all your games in steam
and startisback is a really good start menu for it and improved my fps in most games.

Hold out for Windows 10.
Is good. Although compatibility in update 1 is all over the place.

Windows 8.1 looks more modern, so really there is not much of a difference appart from the menu.

Stick with windows 7, it's more user friendly for desktop users.

Don't do it.

What i have heard is that if you are a windows 7 user you get windows 10 for 20 bucks, maybe even cheaper.

Isn't windows 10 coming out next year though?
