It's like gambling. You have one good run, then play as much as you can because you think you're on a great streak. Then you realize 300 deaths later that you're a piece of stuff for trying to beat the troll engine.

There's that ending where

[Spoiler alert in the link!]
happens, and it debunks the cathedral and chest theories of him not entering the chest, as all paths can lead to this ending. The dark room ending, on the other hand, is simply mom putting up the lost poster, not having much effect on that theory.  All in all, that theory needs a little rework to work with that new ending.
