Quite a number of the dismemberments in this however occur when someone swings from well under their opponents arm, near the elbow or higher, so for a number of these incidents a crossguard probably wouldn't have done much to help.
But it could arguably be of use on a lightsabre anyway.
Don't forget though that the real reason for that design is just to provide something unique.
Think of the prequel trilogy, where they had to have a unique double-sided lightsabre in Ep1 and then someone who can weild four lightsabres in Ep3.
It's just something cool to add in is all.
arent storm troopers clones?
but there is a black one now...
Only during the Clone Wars were they all clones, while Kamino was still pumping them out.
In the Imperial period of the original trilogy they use far fewer clones, and lots of humans are hired to fill in as stormtroopers.
Consider that this is a galaxy spanning Empire and it needs millions of troops, and to keep a population under control.
Easiest way to do that is to provide jobs to the people you're oppressing and hire them into the military.
And it would have to be the case that Stormtroopers weren't all clones, otherwise Han and Luke's disguises in A New Hope would have failed completely, because they're not the same height as all the other Stormtroopers.
I know Leia claims "
Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper", but Luke could just be shorter than most hired Stormtroopers.
And to be fair, whether just a plothole or not, the Stormtrooper whose armour he stole fits him pretty well, so there must be non-clone short Stormtroopers.
but then again i cant imagine they wouldnt get actually skilled troopers instead of the same stuffty guy cloned thousands of time who apparently cant shoot a gun if his life depended on it
I don't know the canonity of this, but there's a fan theory that the Stormtroopers were so terrible at shooting anyone in A New Hope while on the Deathstar because they were told to be, as Luke and co. were wanted alive.
Later on when fighting on Hoth they seem to be more effective in that they are able to clear out the rebel base when they don't have Team Skywalker to deal with.
I enjoyed the trailer. It was after all only a teaser.
And I'ts getting me excited for the film next year.
