Author Topic: Building Tips  (Read 2789 times)

Hello. As you may know I am a mediocre builder. I was wondering if I could get some tips from the best builders in BL. I really want to help release stuff for Blockland but building is just as important as scripting. Thank you.

The easiest way to learn how to build is to watch others styles and try to copy them, then add something of your own too it.

I too want to become a good builder. For terrain I recommend this:

But I suppose what Thorfin said is right, make your own style.

Never use more bricks that needed. If you're using 6 bricks to make a wall that can be made with 1, use the one unless it's part of a style. Using more bricks that needed is called spam. It looks bad and is a tell-tale sign of a sub par build.

Try and use a reference when building a specific thing. A visual aide can really help.

I recommended looking for useful brick packs to add to the defaults. My personal favorite is the Vertical Print Plates. Perfect for getting fine detail into a build.
For more bricks search the forums or look through an RTB Archive.

What about trying to replicate a brick wall pattern, etc.  I use 2×2s and 2×4s constantly for brick wall patterns.

that's fine, many good builds feature a brick pattern like this. But you should try alternating a x4 with a x2, to make a sort of + shape. This'll add a bit of variety to the walls.
Don't need to, of course. Just an idea.

I recommend posting this in the Help section.

For what reason? He does not have any game-related issue that needs to be solved here. He's requesting advice. So please, think before you post, and learn what the forum sections should be used for.

Brick wall being a 'style'.

i need a tutorial on making trees look good D:

utilize odd bricks in clever ways. Arches make good accents over windows, doors and for supports. Layering is also key to a nice structure. Adds vines and other foliage. Inset windows and doors and have interesting walls. Not just plain color stuff.

heres a picture of a build i made that i believe represents a lot of these key points. Its obviously not completed but it still is a good representation of what i am talking about.

I tend to avoid regular geometric shapes and patterns (esp. rectangles and grids) when building terrain

Speaking of terrain, it looks better to use plates and halfbricks to gradually create a small slope or landscaping features imo

If it still doesn't look good, I advise you to plant vines.

What about ModTeir Bricks for terrain?

I like to explain with something i learned while improving my drawing skills.
Everything is made out of a line, C or an S-shape.
You need contrast between those three.
But too much contrast is also a bad thing.

Tl;dr  Have contrast between lines, C-shpes and S-shapes, but not too much.

If it's huge or you want a different texture than studs, go right ahead
I've seen some really cool buildings made from modter, too
