I'm a bit confused about how it went in the movie, cause I'd personally definitely consider the eagles an army (hundreds of birds that came and completely rekt the orcs should be considered an army, right?), but then like you said, there were 2 orc/goblin armies, and the men, and the dwarves, and the elves, which would be 6 armies.

i don't think the eagles would considered an army. because then the bats would be considered too

they also talk about how "they were bread for one thing" (war) which means they aren't considered one itself

the eagles are definitely an army

lOok at it this way. We have the men, who did not plan to get involved in the battle; they wanted their gold from Thorin. We had the Elves, who were after their share of the treasure (specifically some jewels). They didn't plan to get involved in that specific battle. We had the Dwarves, who did plan to defend Erebor. That's three. We can all agree on that, right?

THen we had Azog's army, which he entirely planned BOTH parts, even if they arrived at different times. Besides, based on the image you quoted, there should have been a massive number of wargs involved. I don't recall seeing very many wargs in the movie. Then we had a great number of eagles that swept in a destroyed the orc army, siding with the elves, men, and dwarves.

That would give us an army of

Orcs
Dwarves
Men
Eagles
Elves

5 races, 5 armies.

only reason i was so sure was because i watched it with my friend who read the book and he said it definitely wasnt the eagles and that it was on the orcs side

well, keep in mind that the wolves are indeed a very independent group/race

I still find it odd though, because those Eagles really sure did act like an army in terms of destroying the enemy, lol
