Was just curious since I know WT has the whole tank mode going on now.
Most people don't solely play war thunder for the tanks. This is also evident when playing the game as well as the Ground Forces modes aren't even comparable in popularity to the plane combat.
However it has the benefit of actually all being the same game. It's not hard to hop into a game of tank combat while your planes are out on mission, and it helps divide the action which is nice.
Comparatively, if I wanted to jump into a World of Warplanes game (god forbid), it involves opening up an entirely new game and client which I'm sure you're aware of.
War Thunder has absolutely dominated the genre of air combat video game, and is undoubtedly the most popular. It also has tanks as a bonus.

you're right in that nobody plays warplanes. it's a total bombshell. i think it maxes out at like 200~ people on the NA servers and a few thousand on the russian?
compared to tanks which has at least 40k on the NA server, about 150k on the european, and well over 750 on the russian
