at the end of the day, it wouldn't be successful if people didn't like the game. it's an interesting connection between the game world and the real world as well. but it's still pretty abusive business practice to withhold content from players arbitrarily, when it's already in the game, already developed, and necessary for complete play, and force them to pay a toll in order to access it. i don't know enough about the games to form a more detailed opinion on this; i was under the impression that the figures in infinity and skylanders just gave you optional additional characters, but if figures are actually required to beat the game, that's pretty goofy. amiibos are the right way to do this. they are completely optional and are designed to do absolutely nothing but enhance your experience in multiple games.

Well, you don't need an specific Skylander to beat the main story of the game, but you do need one of every skylander type to get 100% everything (mostly just side routes that give you basically meaningless items from what I've seen). So it's a completionist's nightmare basically, but not much else.
(At least that's how it works in Swap Force. I don't if the other Skylander games differ much in this area.)

It's not that bad from what I've seen so far, but still kinda sucky to consumers.

im curious what op buys that costs as much to make as it does to buy from them.

I know it's been around for a while, but I saw Freek's topic about Nintendo trying to do the same, it just disgusts me.
Well, at least Nintendo did it right.

Hey look everybody! There goes the fanboy defending his favorite company!

Cut the amiibos some slack. Unlike Disney Infinity and Skylanders, they aren't required to beat a game. It's adding on to it like it should be doing. DI and Skylanders force you to buy the characters to enjoy the game. Amiibos have little to no effect on the game. In Smash, it's just a trainable computer player. In MK8, it's just some alternate outfits for your Mii. For Hyrule Warriors, it gives you some rupees or new weapons and whatnot - I don't know, but I do know it's not a game-changer. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is supposed to allow you to have a bit more health or something when you scan a certain amiibo. It's a change, but not dramatic enough for people to reasonably say "On-disc DLC! Boycott! Amiibos are a cash-in!"

The creators of Skylanders also made the classic game Star Control 2. Somewhat depressingly, it's not mentioned on their website at all.

boo hoo children are buying toys that they like to play with, what is your problem.
I won't want my kids to constantly nag me for rubbish, II'm sure neither will you.

"Mom can I get pokemon cards"

I won't want my kids to constantly nag me for rubbish, II'm sure neither will you.
So you are going to brown townyze every single toy that your child wants to see if you like it or not. A toy you won't even play with

I'll be sure to ban Skylanders from my server

There's nothing morally wrong about it, how is it any different from any other way of getting money? If you don't want to spend money on it, just don't.
I'll be sure to ban Skylanders from my server
What?

you heard me brother
but it isnt even in drama brother

amiibos also make sense to be birthed into creation
i mean ever since super smash brothers melee they had a trophy theme thing

what does that poll even mean
ofc the thing they're trying to sell is supposed to make money. stop complaining about stupid stuff

op doesn't understand marketing

the only thing i don't like is how you need some of these figures to do things, which ofc i know is marketing but i should be able to win the game 100% as spyro

not need a bomb throwing midget and then a 4 armed bumbles
