the 3D on the XL works better than it does on the original for me.

The New Nintendo 3DS (not XL) has a removable face/back plate, on the back of the top/bottom screen.
You can remove them and replace them with ones of different designs, to customise their look.
Similar to changing your phone case, for example.

The 3DS does not feature this.

It's not like a 2DS won't be any smaller than it.

I find the XL systems to fit my hands better, and that's why I prefer using it.
