Someone please explain what "for the first year" means

Is it free only for 1 year, then you pay or you'll upgrade freely only for 1 year?

from what the verge is saying, in the same year as windows 10 is out, you can upgrade it absolutely free.

I think its free for a year, then you pay a subscription.
This tweet from Microsoft describes windows 10 as a service, so I think it's safe to say its a subscription service
