Yeah, I don't know why he isn't responding but I'll make an RP post then.

Bell heads over to the shopping mall, stopping to mail a letter to her sister in South Aesthia at a post office before walking around the mall.

Ass.

I follow Steele around. I figure that I'm better off buying a cheap last-generation phone, because when I get back to NAUC, it most likely won't work, especially If we're not getting Commnet phones.

back to shopping please
I head to one of the not-Commnet service providers' storefronts to find a new phone.

You head over to Triple-H, Hearst and Helmsley's Heuristics, and are presented with a fairly wide variety of phones to pick up, a good amount of them expensive as balls. At least Triple-H is fairly reliable, has good customer service, stuff like that. There's a few attendees standing about, ready to help a customer, with several more already doing their job of directing the hapless consumers into the most expensive items possible.

Bell heads over to the shopping mall, stopping to mail a letter to her sister in South Aesthia at a post office before walking around the mall.

You drop the letter off without hassle, even getting rushed to the front of the line once people notice the uniform (Unless you've changed into something else.) As you walk around the mall, you see the same sights as Steele and Kissinger, and out of the corner of your eye, a familiar pale Kintharian with a silly haircut appears briefly. There's a split second of eye contact as you look, then she's suddenly lost in the crowd.

You follow Steele into the store and see exactly what he does.

"Huh. This one looks nice."
I pick up one of this year's new phones, then look at the price tag.
"Nope."
I try to find one of last year's models, see if they have it. Sure enough, they do, marked down a hundred or so dollars (with contract). I go talk to one of the salespeople to see what I can do about purchasing said phone.

"Our Asethian cash isn't worth as much here. stuff. We don't get payed enough for this." I say, before Steele walks off for another phone.

I walk off and look for a phone as well.

Thud.

Ugh. What time is it? My arm instinctively shoots upwards onto the nightstand, knocking over a few items as it sweeps across the surface. Ah, that's right. I don't have a smartphone with me. I slowly pry my eyes open and pick myself up off the floor. The sky shines brightly through the window, bathing the room in a soft blue light.

The clock on the wall reads five minutes to noon. Not the worst time I've woken up at. I pile the blankets back on the bed, throw on some clothes, pocket some essentials and walk out the door, holding an arm up as the harsh midday sun falls on my face. I'm pretty sure the others are already out and about, so I head out and arrive at a sidewalk contouring the beach.

I lean over the stone wall and take in the sight. Gods, it's beautiful out. Nothing but white sand and sparkling blue water, no clouds for miles. For a moment I thought about turning back and heading to the mall to do my shopping, but it'd be a waste to spend all my time there without enjoying the day.

The shoes come off, and warm sand fills my toes. I start walking down the length of the beach.

I'm still sitting in the cafeteria after missing multiple missions.
My mind has never been this empty. I have never been so blank.
The clock.
The clock is getting louder, and louder, and louder.
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. TICK. TOCK.
It's as if a darkness was trying to consume me.

Make it stop. Make it stop. Make it stop. "MAKE IT STOP!" I yell.

The whole base probably heard me.

I quickly get up from my seat and exit the cafeteria.
The noise fades away.

You get a few querying looks from a few people wondering what could possibly be strapping your finances so hard you can barely afford an older smartphone, before each of you picks out a phone. (As a rule you can get like modern smartphones but no hologram stuff)

[Snip]

The beach is lively, and it seems the war has yet to taint the mood. Or perhaps it has, and these people are simply trying to live every moment as though it were their last. Regardless, it's loud and boisterous. You see children making sand houses and castles, and other children lying in wait for their chance to act like the gargantuan monstrosities of old legend. Some of the more ambitious little ones have constructed not just a village and a castle, but a wall around it. A child playing the leviathan comes and is promptly struck down playfully by the guards.
Pulling your eyes away from the scene, you see a great deal of people sunbathing. They range from pretty alright to drop dead gorgeous, and it's mostly Mercanans around, contrasting heavily with the white sand.
Scanning along closer to the horizon, you see surfers and the like riding the waves daringly. Nearby there's a few places to grab refreshments, which is probably advisable, as the beach isn't exactly the coolest area around.

[Snop]

You're on leave in a Mercanan tourist city, not on base.

Hoh man, look at all these pretty women! A particularly stunning Mercanan lady with a beautiful olive complexion catches my eye, the striped towel she's laying on emphasizing the curvature of her body. Hot damn. I like what I see, but I'm not allowed to touch. I tear myself away from the view before I overstay my welcome and continue down the beach.

I'm feeling pretty good today. Seeing all these people having fun, it's almost enough to make me forget there's a war going on thousands of miles away from here. Almost enough to make me forget the destruction, the tears, the bodybags...

... Bodybags? I blink before looking around again. No, just people here.

I take a moment to wipe the sweat off my brow. stuff, it's hot. This uniform isn't doing me any favors. Maybe I should've bought some new clothes before coming down here after all.

Those refreshment shacks over there seem like a good place to cool my head. I walk into one, immediately relieved by the shade. It's quite busy. I take a seat by the counter and look at the menu board on the wall.

I ignore the glances from people and then decide forget it, I can afford this and pick out this year's model.
there's no holographic stuff on it i assume
After making the purchase, I start setting up what I remember. Wife's number, check, CO's desk, check... stuff. I think I'm forgetting something. I shrug and dismiss it as paranoia. I then head to my hotel room so I can pack my stuff in a brand new duffel bag that I completely forgot to mention myself purchasing at Jannsen's.

I watch Steele purchase a new, top-of-the-line smartphone. The phone I'm standing over seems okay, the model being a year or so old, I think. forgetin' Mercana.

I eyeball an attenedent and shake my head to try to get him to come over. He comes over and says something in Mercanan. I stuff out my best bit of Mercanan and hope I wasn't saying anything absolutely obscene.

"[No Mercanaian]," I enunciate.

I show him the Asethian patch on my shoulder for good measure. He looks a bit confused.
