through the magic of kintharian science you don a special, bulky, dorky looking helmet and look like a complete goober while it renders virtual planes for you to shoot virtual munitions at from your real plane while really flying
for practice and stuff

they hooked it up so they could duel each other in a safe environment
nobody in charge would ever OK the idea of two pilots going up and actually shooting each other
