"Impressive, you're lucky she missed the shot. I think dealing with weapons having the proper positioning and awareness is key from my point of view, at least."

Walt pauses

"If you're a pilot then how many - uh, "ground" kills would you have?"
: Well... just two, with a knife. Three total, counting the Imp I shot on the way to the bridge, but he might still be alive. He was still moving when we passed him in the hall, anyway.

"With the wealth of experience you had, and how you guys waxed us in the simulators a while back, I honestly would have believed that you had outpaced us kill wise," Jaakko replies.
Kommandant attempts to choose his next words very carefully, considering the current company.
: All I can say is that we've been on different fronts, fighting different enemies. Imperials are... more cautious with their deployments, I've heard.

He hangs his head a bit and studies objects on the table.

"We don't have a low turnover though, one could make the argument that we lose experience as fast as we may gain it. The squadron that started the war, was not the same squadron that saw the end the Pact forces on Kiraza. The squadron that saw the end of the Pact on Kiraza, is much less of the squadron that is seeing the Imperials on the home front today,"

He looks up and at objects across the room.

"And the squadron that started the war could not find a trace of its existence except in Bell who is the Actual,"
: Or, you guys have just been getting the most dangerous missions. That could also explain your high victory count and turnover rate.

Jaakko reflects on Kommadants statement about deployments, while holding his gaze on some artifacts dedicated to the history of Valhalla AFB in the corncer. He deduces the statement is true, remembering slave planes making little attempt to escape, or being left behind outright.

"It's unnerving to think the one is left to command by virtue of not buying it," Jaakko laments.

He thinks to himself as his eyes look to the bar and at the rows of alcohols that rest around the centerpiece, though his eyes don't really see it, or process it.

He reflects on Geary's innate aptitude for squadron command. Jaakko considers saying that he supposes that it is a responsibility now that he lead the squadron. A part of his conscience prevents him from saying it though, one that remembers Xiaomei's venomous words after losing the base at Tocatlan when Jaakko was riddled with self-pity.

Jaakko is left thinking that it is his responsibility, of this responsibility, that it was an accident. But he had been in the chain of command, the 'hat' of commander, the responsibility had come to rest on his shoulders as it must find somewhere to rest. It was up on him, on his accountability. The result of centuries of a military's necessity for redundant and safeguarded command systems had found that Jaakko Kirves was to be charged with the wellbeing his men, not by accident, but by design.

A catharsis of sorts.

It is a responsibility. It is now his responsibility.

Not by accident. By design.

And it was his job to either step up, or step aside, for the wellbeing of his squadron. Geary was a null point for the command structure, it was now only Major Kirves.

The thought of this being an accident entered his head once more, but he found that the idea carried much less weight. It was not as forceful- much less so. Perhaps it was an accident, but if it were he would soon find himself replaced, but at that it was his responsibility to ensure that only Jaakko Kirves was replaced, rather than the Mjolnir Squadron.

Jaakko shifted his gaze to Rikard, then Yamashiro, then Coaxoch. He felt underneath them. Perhaps rightly so, but for sure they were his elders in their experience.

Jaakko looks to the table, and is left with the feeling that he is either to learn or leave, and that the ends must be justified by whichever choice he takes, and that if either result in anything less than the highest standard of wellbeing of his men, then he had made the wrong choice, and at that point he was to surrender the responsibility of command, so that the 'hat' would go to find the next suitable candidate.

"I'm guessing the first one gave you some liking to using a knife then. And you've got... 21 aircraft kills? I remember seeing you aircraft the other day."

: That's just how squad command works during war. One day you just fall into the officer's chair and get told that you're it until you're dead or the brass finds someone better. And seeing as you haven't been busted down or replaced, they must figure you're pretty good.

"I'm guessing the first one gave you some liking to using a knife then. And you've got... 21 aircraft kills? I remember seeing you aircraft the other day."
: Yup, and I haven't lost a single plane. Outside of wargames, of course, but I wasn't counting kills from those either.

"wargames are my only downs as well."

Walt pauses for a moment and begins to lightly smile to himself

"It's a surprise you haven't killed anyone with those good looks either."

: Oh?

everybody in the bar but walt groans

Yui's mind begins flashing back to her early missions, and how brash she had been. She'd fought until she'd needlessly been shot down, and she had always had to eject. Her panicking had gotten her nowhere over Tocatlan, where she'd been shot down - and nearly killed - because she unnecessarily wasted flares. That was the reason she'd ended up tangled in a tree and captured by Deltans.

She decides to ask for another drink.

Walt firms up his expression

"It's a compliment, if you're alright with that sort of thing."

Jaakko doesn't hear Kommadant, but is rather left weighing his options. He doesn't really feel comfortable with the pressing dichotomy of sucking it up or surrendering command.

She decides to ask for another drink.
Your request is granted.

Walt firms up his expression
"It's a compliment, if you're alright with that sort of thing."
Virvel takes a seat next to him at the bar.
: I'm also alright with drinks, and smokes.

Jaakko doesn't hear Kommadant, but is rather left weighing his options. He doesn't really feel comfortable with the pressing dichotomy of sucking it up or surrendering command.
Since Jaakko doesn't respond, Kommandant continues his train of thought.
: Now, I would be inclined to agree with them. At first, I thought you were just some spineless coward who couldn't even stand up to a pair of dumb mutts, you sure proved me wrong, bailing out of their plane into a combat zone to pick up the fight there. I'm pretty sure most men would have hid in the nearest closet, but you sought us out on the bridge and arguably saved the whole operation. At the least, you made it run a lot smoother.

Walt loosens up a bit slightly nerved now, not expecting that to fully work.

"I can't really do much for smokes but I could definelty get you a drink."

Jaakko picks up on "spineless coward," and looks to Kommadant, but doesn't interrupt. He hears him out.

"Well," Jaakko starts, "Riding the Fenrir down wasn't really conducive to living, and the Pertinax snagged me by accident at that. When I landed I could still hear gunfire, so my inclination was to hide in a closet until the gunfire stopped, considering that I have no weapons training beyond that of a sidearm and SERE. When I jumped into the ship I'd found that the marine team had more or less secured a line to the bridge, so it worked out that way. After that-"

Jaakko's voice drops.

He looks away and remembers the Marine next to him eating a long burst of MG fire.

"It's an uncomfortable topic-" he says.

"I can't really do much for smokes but I could definitely get you a drink."
: Alright, how about some vodka, then? I don't know about you, but I like Dziedzic.

Jaakko picks up on "spineless coward," and looks to Kommadant, but doesn't interrupt. He hears him out.

: Everyone would have had the inclination to hide, even myself. But you overcame it, that's what matters.

"I'll see if they have it."

Walter turns and attempts to order from the bartender

"Could I get a, uh- Dziedzic Vodka for the lady here?"

Jaakko doesn't know how to follow up to the 'complement,' and is left looking around the table though.

"I'm no Geary though," he says quietly.
