The Hornet is launched without any issues, which is promising news for the development of the SSTO Craft for the European Space Agency.

The naval vessels will be co-developed by Finland and Sweden but the ships built for both nations will utilize different class names. The vessels will be designed and built as stealth ships. Though Sweden already has a finalized frigate design and partially completed destroyer design, it will develop another frigate/destroyer design in cooperation with Finland and build at least one ship for each of those alternative classes. The main goal of the mutual development program is to combine the strengths of existing stealth vessels in both navies and expand upon the platform that those designs have set up.

The appropriate support facilities are also being constructed for the expanding Swedish navy, and a new Arvika-class vessel has been ordered. Sweden is hoping to participate in naval wargames with friendly nations to test the capabilities of the Visby-class corvette, since the Arvika-class frigate will not be completed until late in the year.

The Swedish Air Force acquires several Eurocopter Tigers and more transport helicopters, some of which are to be modified for submarine hunting.

Sweden launches domestic alternative energies initiative to reduce dependence on petroleum and other fossil fuels for energy and a spending plan to make such technologies more viable is approved. This is a part of an effort to stimulate the local technology industry and heavy industry in Sweden.

Existing nuclear power plants in the country are being replaced with next generation plants that are expected to have a long lifetime of over 70 years; furthermore, hydropower dams in Sweden have been upgraded with more efficient turbines. Wind turbines are also being constructed inside cities. If the initiative continues, then the already small share of fossil fuels in electrical generation will be reduced to practically nothing by 2006.


The Riksdag passes a bill that gives subsidies to companies that are developing sustainable large-scale agricultural alternatives and indoor farming facilities in Sweden.
