The world's economy is in ruins. It is ESTO's fault.
Every country is scared of ESTO, so they do not dare speak out against it just yet.
There are millions of rebels in the US that absolutely hate ESTO. They will fight to the end. They condemn all their actions and will do anything to get rid of them.

Most of the Americans left living move to where they believe there will be the least radiation, up north. States like Michigan and Wisconsin and Minnesota and the Dakotas get a large influx of people trying to stay alive. This region is the remainder of the United States.
The South American Socialist Alliance has taken South America by storm and is now the strongest conventional force on the planet. They also have the strongest economy fueled by communism.
The WAA comes in second with loads of oil and the spirit of Allah in their hearts.
New Zealand is taken under the wing of Australia and peacefully annexed.
