Author Topic: Is it okay if I leave my computer on overnight?  (Read 2547 times)

I'm paranoid as forget about it, because I fear fire. Is it okay, and does anyone else do this?
I'd like to host a dedicated server on my side.
Also, what settings should I use to consume as low power as possible? Is there some way to automatically switch to this at night?
Thanks.
My computer is fairly new and is an Acer Aspire ATC-120-UC22. It's connected to a surge protector that is attached to an extension cord, because my set-up is far from an outlet.

Yeah my computer is on 24/7

as long as the fan isn't dusty i doubt a fire will ever break out
you could just turn everything off except the dedicated host, too

Leaving it on is fine.

Since it's probably running windows as well, it should go into sleep mode automatically after 2 hours of non use iirc.

Quite a few viruses are programmed to activate at night for people that do that
lol

no there is a chance it will come alive and strangle you to death in your sleep, then burn the house down

happened to me a few times

Yes op, its perfectly fine to leave it on overnight. The onyl time its not alright is if you have little to no cooling in your computer and your doing something intensive.

No, one time I left my gaming laptop overnight and then when I got back on to use it it was lagging and crashing everywhere so I thought I had to restart it but then I got this Black screen with white text telling me something about system 32. Now I don't know what caused this because I did not download any virus's but I couldn't even start the bloody thing in safe mode, it was one of the weirdest times and most stressful because PC is my favorite for everything and all I had was an xbox 360 and at the time I didn't have any friends on my xbox live account (Now I have 89 friends on Live)

ask your parents if they're ok with you using that much power lol

I keep my computers off because if I had my computer plus a server running plus a file server it would cost a lot of money on our power bill.

You got some prebuilt so I wouldn't expect your wattage to be too high since you don't even have a dedicated gpu

I wouldn't leave a computer on 24/7

Do you think a virus is going to seep out of your internet explorer icon and infect your computer when you aren't watching?
