From what I've seen actually you can enable a Hard Mode which I guess adds extra challenge. It comes with the game and is enabled as a mod, which means you could probably make an even harder difficulty if you wanted through modding. Plus the game adds a lot more depth than what SC4 had in terms of micromanagement.
