Author Topic: can we talk about the state of servers on this game right now?  (Read 12391 times)

Yeah literally everyone that goes "WELL GO MAKE UR OWN SERVER" should try it for themselves first.

Some people don't like being in a management role, and would much rather enjoy and populate what there already is that's good.

the people who say that kind of stuff usually are the people who don't do stuff to help the community anyways so they have no room to talk.

I host my own servers all the time with friends, I can be the player and the manager. So don't say that I'm not doing anything and have no room to talk. I talk from years of experience and I know you have no room to talk. It's much easier now than it was in v9 to make a server, anyone can do it. I could host a listen server from scratch and have a lot of fun with little prep and low maintenance (it's a listen server, not a dedicated server). So don't give me your garbage excuse that no one wants the management position, because it's a moot point. You don't have to be a "manager" in order to host a listen server because it's temporary and lasts for you and your friend's enjoyment.

YOU NEED TO HAVE A RESTAURANT IN ORDER TO SAY THAT THEY ARE TERRIBLE!
I don't think many people are necessarily saying this, it's more about "stop complaining they are terrible and go open a good restaurant."

it's like this
"Man, all the restaurants in this town are stuff. The food is all the same, the waiters are starfishs, and the patrons are loud and obnoxious."
"WELL HOW ABOUT YOU GO MAKE YOUR OWN RESTAURANT THEN? NEVERMIND THE FACT THAT YOU MAY HAVE NO COOKING OR MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE, YOU NEED TO HAVE A RESTAURANT IN ORDER TO SAY THAT THEY ARE TERRIBLE!"

Apples and oranges

theres a difference between knowing ways to improve servers and actually making those servers from scratch.

Like I said, some people don't enjoy the management role, but they do like giving advice to other people to make their places better.

Like I said, not everyone is willing to take the time and resources to make a good server, hosting a server requires decent internet which some people may not have access to.
and sure, you had fun with it, but did anyone else have fun with it? did your server actually get a playerbase that wasn't you and your friends?
also no matter what as long as you're hosting, you're the one managing the server, you're the one who has to ban people breaking the rules and appointing administrators for the server. no matter what you're the person managing the server as long as you're hosting it.

If you don't have internet, then how are you playing blockland online. What weed are you smoking flats, because it must be the strong stuff.

Blockland servers are the easiest things to run with the least amount of resources required, even less than minecraft. Again, I have no idea what you are smoking.

So what, rules are easy to make and bans require the click of a button. Don't want random people screwing up your server? Put a password on it.

I said DECENT internet
some people have really crappy internet and are incapable of hosting without their connection going to stuff.

and still, some people don't like being the guy who has to ban people and deal with problematic situations, and the whole point of this topic is making good PUBLIC servers, not private ones.

Then just dont host a server then, you really seem adamant at playing devils advocate to find the worst situations possible. I'm pretty sure anyone with dial up still shouldn't even be playing online games much in the first place. And don't forget the previous solutions I had, get a friend, someone else, or a dedicated hoster to host it.

To be frank most of those people would have a hard time in any server.

To be fair, there is a big difference between download speed (what you need to play on servers) and upload speed (what you need to host a server). The latter is often much lower than the former because of cheap-ass internet services. Plus, you can just get a blocknet server off of allowance alone. You don't need to be a super-rich person to host a server.

I used to host servers frequently, but I sorta stopped since rtb hosting went down.
I did use blocknet, but since then I just never got in the mood to host one anymore. Thing is I used to do a slightly new thing every time and I ran out of things and eventually I just got bored.
I guess I could do an old thing I did, but with all the saves I have idk if I'll even find some of my arenas.
Plus I'm just not in the mood to start it up then wait 10 minutes for one guy to show up and leave a minute later. I just want to join an already set up game with a couple of people already filled with action.
I don't really want to host it on my computer with subpar internet that'll only stay up as long as my computer has it up, but I don't really feel like paying for a monthly server that I'll only use once or twice then forget I even had the service either. I feel like I have to host if I pay for a monthly thing otherwise I'd waste my money, and I really only want to host when I want.

oh boy i know what that's like

I'd really love to make a Server with a kind of DM/Control gamemode based off of Destiny's (even with Destiny PvP maps recreated in BL maybe?), it'd probably have some class selection stuff for different weapon types and mobility options (like double jumping or limited jet boost) but I cant commit myself to making most of that on my own.

If you want it badly, you'll have to work at it. Big projects like that will take time and dedication. But a simple BL deathmatch and stuff requires little effort and time. What you are describing is a total large scale project to develop a working gamemode within the game.

If you can point out the flaws of a server you have creativity

If you have the tenacity to do it you are boasting skill
Not quite. Anyone can know if they aren't having fun, and anyone can at the very least vaguely figure out what's stopping them from having it. This doesn't necessarily indicate a complex understanding of design on a fundamental level, nor would it, alone, indicate the ability to generate new ideas. Knowledge and skill are also distinct; someone can hold a high amount of theoretical information about something and have very little grasp on how to apply the ideas. Another thing to consider is that realising the absence of something in a game experience doesn't necessarily mean that a solution is also realised.

The cookers vs. diners comparison ("you don't have to be a chef to know bad food") isn't a perfect comparison since taste is a natural sense, but the basic principle of it stands; a connoisseur is a connoisseur because they have unique and specialised knowledge in the subject matter, but most average people can tell when something isn't quite right.

No matter what way you look at it, creating a good server is very much so a question of game design; you are designing a game. Blockland provides a platform upon which one can easily build an extended game experience on their own, but the essential requirements remain the same.

Why is this in drama now?
