I'd rather have a well written character intended to fill the role than a minority/whatever shelled in merely to fit a diversity quota

You can't count Elder Scolls or Fallout or Borderlands. Those are voiceless gamer created inserts, not writers fleshing out stories about the characters. Those games are plot and gameplay driven, not story er, character story I mean.

And why is that?
Because they do.

There's no loving generalising reason for it. Writers simply want to explore stories, and they make decisions that mean males seem more appropriate as characters.

Stop trying to find the loveism that doesn't loving exist.

Should be noted that I've only written game stories with female characters. Is it because I think there should be more female characters in games? Absolutely loving not. Is because I want to "exploit women" and give them lovey outfits? forget off. It's because female personalities match the game stories I'm developing. That's it.

Having a male/female character shouldn't matter at all as long as they are able to fit the role in the story.

I haven't personally played fallout, but I have played skyrim. And I can definitely tell you that the female characters do have story, believe it or not. In borderlands 2 literally all of the characters have next to no fleshed-out story, so yes, it's equal for the males and females.

Did you not get that I was making a joke? I thought it seemed obvious.
where's that "jokes on you i was just kidding" picture

If it wasn't a joke I would have been more serious and left out words like edgy and puberty. Jesus forget I know it is aimed at adults.

It is gone. Poof.

replace 'pretending' with 'kidding' and you're good to go

Great, fantastic.

But that's still not addressing the deeper issue here. What is an intrinsically "male" story and what's a "female" story?

Shouldn't any good story be applicable to as many people as possible, therefor you can put any gender of character in it and it'll still hold its own?

If there can't be any petty female thieves in GTA, why not? And if the answer is cause you don't personally want to, cool, I'm not going to ask you to specifically. But I am going to start to wonder then if maybe, after your thirtieth or fortieth consecutive male driven story why we can't have something new or different? White, chisel-jawed male after white chisel-jawed male gets tedious.

Oh, there is a lot of female protagonists with deep story to them.
What's the name of that one girl trying to make the survival guide to the waste-lands? She lived in Megaton.

More multi-facited NPCs are a great step in the right direction, of course.

Maybe but that wasn't what rockstar wanted to do so they didn't.

Then don't play GTA and find a game that suites your wishes.
