I heard a lot about Windows 10 - I'm going to reserve for it.

home preview what is that? if you can't update 10 because of updater erroring you can update it with the newest version iso.

There's also a registry fix but it didn't work for me.

The correct answer is "no" because the website says absolutely nothing about them getting it, it only says windows 7 and 8.1 users will get it wow nevermind

The reservation UI is provided by an update, so yes.
the latest windows update that's listed under "optional" is from september of last year but ok. i'll let them update anyways

since this upgrade offer lasts for a year, i'm probably just going to wait until i get my new computer

Almost certainly not
People who have installed the Technical/Consumer Preview will be able to upgrade to full windows 10 once it is out, even if you installed it on another computer, meaning if you did not install it on your main computer both your computers can receive the update.

What I did is use a loophole  to get a vista laptop upgraded to 10 full.

After you finish the upgrade, you can opt-out of being an insider, as being a windows insider will stay probably for a very long time even after its released.
