Author Topic: How can I get started with building?  (Read 1529 times)

I know the controls and I know the mechanics to the game, and I've been on here for a few years. I've still never yet really mastered building, beside making spammy little huts and such.

Any tips? Any decent mods I should get? Any decent brick-packs?

There was a recent guide created going over all the blockland building basics.

take what you like in others builds, and mix that in with your own style.
there's nothing wrong with looking at pictures off the internet or others creations, it's how you get more ideas

build something
build another thing
build something else
build some more
build even more
get frustrated that your building sucks and give up
attempt to build something after a long hiatus and suddenly you're pretty good at it

Pretty much how I became a really good builder

It's a gradual process. The more you work on your skills, the better you will become. Look at other people's builds and use their styles in your own work. You will develop your own style eventually. You should build something that you think is good and upload it to the gallery. Don't be afraid. Take people's criticisms and improve.

when i started in 2009, a majority of my builds sucked
6 years later, and they still appear to lack a certain quality to them

following real world examples work, but the detail of it eventually becomes arbitrary

custom bricks enable increased detail, but they appear foreign to me and generally clutter the building menu-though your decision to use them might benefit

i honed my creativity from past builds and builders
fob has always been at the top of my favorite builders list, yet I found others who reached a certain peak of construction

older users such as BAC and morg compel me to succeed from where they left off, and I do so by attempting to refine their styles

building shares similarity to tradition, as continuing the trade allows certain aspects of it to survive

recreating the magic of these builds has been the fuel for my ambition

tldr: find a theme
find a passion
refine the old into new by adding your own twist
attempt new ideas

It is not like riding a bike. :)

ya u also gotta b rly rad
otherwise every1 cramps ur style

press q, point at the ground and hit the left mouse button, then press numpad enter

All it takes is practice and patience.

You're probably best off trying to build something you really enjoy (hobbies or something from a game) or try building a place you know really well.

I would not advise trying to start a project from start though.

If you try to build buildings: do not make them symmetrical

ya but what if ur trying to build a house!!
