In Fallout 1 you were just a vault dweller who was randomly selected to go out and find a replacement water chip to save the vault. Other than that, all the events in the game happened or were influenced by your actions. Nothing in the story was fixed set in stone and nothing was scripted.

You could A happen then have J happen because of L which then leads to Z instead of Y because you did X. Whereas in Fallout 3 B must happen because of A which leads to C then D. From D you get E or F.

Assassin's Creed Three drowned us in choreographed gameplay videos in the open world, but then they threw off the sheet and gave us a linear as stuff story mode with a poorly segmented, useless wilderness and a couple of cities with nothing to do. Even gameplay videos lie. They show only what they want to show.
