Speech is super useful because you can just convince someone to do stuff instead of going all over the world to retrieve some stupid document or whatever.

Wow barter is the best
I agree with Nonnel on this one. Barter is forgetin great.

What's the point? Congrats, you've accumulated 10,000 caps, but you can also now buy a dozen Mini Nukes for a nickel so it doesn't matter

Bartering was a pretty big deal in Fallout 1 and 2 since items were scarcer and more expensive.

I have something like 40,000 caps on my PS3 New Vegas save, 100 Bartering and 100 Repair makes for a mean combo.

In regards to speech checks, do you guys prefer the system from Fallout 3, or New Vegas?

In 3 for example, you could have 50 Speech, and when you talk to a certain NPC you have a dialogue option reliant on your Speech.
At 50 Speech in this example, you could have a 100% guarantee of succeeding.
But if you had 25 Speech, you might have a 40% chance, and pressing it could still make you succeed, although you're more likely to fail.

In New Vegas however, you could have 50 Speech, and when you talk to a certain NPC they also have a Speech reliant option, but it is not reliant on chance.
You need a minimum of say, 75 Speech to succeed. If you have 50, you will always fail, although will get an interesting/amusing piece of dialogue. But if you have 75 or above, you are guaranteed to always succeed.

So, do you prefer a Chance based system, where even with 1 point in Speech you might very rarely succeed the hardest challenge, or a minimum-level based system, where even if you're 1 point under, you can not complete the check?

Chance makes more sense
Even if you're a bad speaker, you have a chance

I think New Vegas' is more realistic, but at the same time, I don't really know if that's important, because I can just eat some Mentats, or drink some Vodka, or put on a Duster or a Lab-coat, and it will instantly give me more scientific knowledge, or bartering capability, or just make me better at talking.

And that's no more realistic than an idiot accidentally saying the right thing by random chance.

I much prefer the Speech threshold, otherwise it's way too easy to just save before the check and brute force it

It probably is a better system.
I just find it very annoying when I'm 1 point under from an important check, and I've drunk my alcohol, put on my fancy clothes, and eaten my mentats.

As long as you know how many points your Speech will increase per extra Charisma point it's not that big of an issue

I prefer Fallout 3's chance system. I can't help but abuse it through quick saves though. :(

That's a dumb reason to not like a mechanic. If you choose to save scum then that's your choice, but its not like the mechanic's to blame for players cheating the system.

Speaking of save scumming, What are your guy's thoughts on dog meat being immortal and the fact that some NPCs being unkillable because they are essential to the story?
