i just started playing fallout 1 again and experienced this. like 6 mole rats chased me out of the grid, and i went straight to shady sands

Optional traits:
Gifted which will give you +1 all your special stats
Second trait is optional, I recommend fast shot because attacks will cost 1 less action point at the cost of aiming. It's a pretty good trait if you like to burst fire most of them, it's also a must if you intend to use big guns later. The Combat shotgun is a pretty good burst weapon since the ammo is pretty common and deals a chunk of damage when you are close. Works Combat shotgun also works best with the 14mm pistol and flamer.
Skills: If you don't like running into things that like to bite, stab, punch, or shoot you then go with outdoorsman. However if you want to live off mob loot go with First Aid.
Tagging Small guns is pretty good since you usually start out with a pistol no matter what. Small guns is pretty safe to go with since have a higher chance of finding ammo for them.
Alternatively you can tag energy weapons and get a laser pistol, ammo isn't too common in the beginning, but raiders will drop small energy cells later in the game. Late game enemies carry micro fusion and small energy cells.
Barter: If you intend to fight a lot, loot every body and you should have enough items to get better stuff without actually having to use caps.
