Should we torture people who commit horrible crimes?

Yes
No

Author Topic: Debate: Is it right to torture people for heinous crimes? (Added poll)  (Read 3744 times)

Title. I've seen this brought up a lot in topics about killing sprees and whatnot, so I think it would make for an interesting topic to debate on.

Blockland Forums, what do you think? Should Flash Mobers face torture?

If its something as bad as a Flash Mob or school shooting, then yes, torture should be necessary

if we torture them then were no better lmao

No. Nobody deserves to be tortured, no matter how heinous their crime. Torture was something we did in the 1400s. We are more civilized than that.

an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind

Torture is not ok unless it's on a terrorist that hid a nuke somewhere and you need to know where it is to stop it from going off. Torturing as punishment is stupid and pointless.

I think it depends on the severity of the action they took to be incarcerated and the will of the family to do it. If I came home to find my family murdered, and the culprit in chains somewhere, you had best believe there would be blood. It would take a while. I would not enjoy it. They would get their due.

There's a quote that I love. It goes something like : "And when I leave you will finally understand why storms are named after people." The context isn't quite correct, but I feel it's applicable here.

Depends on what kind of torture imo.

Everybody has a different opinion on this and it all comes down to what your threshold of "do they deserve it" is. There's absolutely no logic behind it and starting an argument on it will go nowhere and change nobody's mind.

P much this
Two wrongs don't make a right, stopping to brutality doesn't make it better, etc etc

Justice in this day and age shouldn't be performed out of malice or hatred. It was suppose to be designed to perform judgement indiscriminately depending on the severity of the crime. If it calls for executions then execution should be swift and painless. There's a reason we don't hang people anymore much less electrocute them or chop off their head publicly. Justice isn't entertainment its suppose to be a serious matter. (Im looking at you judge judy)

But the problem is that its a flawed system and only gets more flawed because its handled by men. No way around that unless you want a computer to run it for you (and that could lead to some really bad things).

Not to mention that the nature of crime fluctuates and evolves depending on what society thinks. Look at some of the middle eastern countries. You could get your hand chopped off for stealing. We are just as capable of devolving as we are evolving as a "progressive" society. For those of you who think torture is necessary, would you want to get tortured in the future over petty theft?

On a tangent here, this kind of issue is one of the reasons I don't like mass media. It's for the masses. The masses aren't people that can stomach violence. It's what happened in Nam. It's what happened in the Middle East. Another quote I love: "We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."

People these days are squeamish and not people of action. It's what they were raised to be.
