If you have literally no choice but to work in extremely harsh conditions for extremely little money if you want to survive, are you really free to do what you want?
Not really, and I won't pretend like social mobility was actually a thing back then.

However, comparing stuffty working conditions to forced servitude is ridiculous.

I'm not saying they're even remotely equal, I'm saying they're both extremely bad things to do to people and that both should be recognized instead of just one.

I think I covered the market revolution and the gilded age much more than the Civil War era in my history class.

... they are both recognized. Have you ever taken a history class?

Furthermore, that's irrelevant to the topic.

According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, freedom of expression is the right of every individual to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Even if there was some deeper meaning to the flag and it has some "southern pride" thing, most of the morons who fly it today literally dont even know when or what happened during the Civil War. I might as well throw up the national socialist party flag claiming its "history" come on

And you cant have "southern pride" when you've lived in the northeast all your life

doesn't this fall under the first amendment?

doesn't this fall under the first amendment?
Yes.

Might I add that the Confederate Flag was never the flag for the Confederacy.

People who are just now getting word of this past week's events might think the gays just beat the confederates in the civil war lol

Yes.

it was the flag they carried into battle tho and was more popular than the real confederacy flag

It was not lol.

Half the people in this thread probably don't know the full history of the flag. And they probably think that the civil war was based 100% only on racism and slavery.

well it was a political stress between constituitonal rights between the north and south, mainly because the south wanted a more loose state structure, while the north wanted a stronger, national political structure.

however, a strong ideal (and mark) of the confederate states was the fact that slavery should be allowed / decided by the states whether the people should have it or not.

(also the emancipation proclimation really made it more of a war about slavery than politics. lincoln pretty much said it himself.)

lastly, the thing that makes the civil war more about racism, in my opinion, is the reconstruction that came after it. the north won, and in theory, the 13th (as well as the 14th and 15th amendments) was supposed to totally rid of all slavery and discrimination. when we passed the amnesty act, however, and R.B. Hayes was elected, the democrats fell back into power, in which by "total surprise" were almost all confederates - which enstated the jim crow laws , as well as other things such as the grandfather clause and poll taxes for votes (which again, discriminated against previous slaves). the final nail in the coffin was the point where, and in plessy vs furguson, all of these were declared constitutional.

imo, it's not a freedom of speech issue, as in theory, it is not involved with politics and more of a social issue between race (in which it should be seen as highly rude, not illegal to fly).

the thing about saying it's "southern pride", however, is just stupid. if you had common sense, you wouldn't fly a flag that people hold high offense to. should I fly a national socialist germany flag because "Riddler helped the economy" and "I'm a true german, with german pride"? no way.

tl;dr: civil war was mainly about slavery anyway, and the confederate flag can be considered offensive.

If hanging CSA and Confederate Battle flags is banned then the flag of any other county who has warred the US should be banned.  We fought those wars because of differing ideals so any country with differing ideals is some tribal evil.

I'm going to start hanging up the flags of countries who were the US's enemies to see who I can piss off.

I think you're missing the point about why the csa flag is considered bad

personally I think its more American to eat the cake flags of your enemies because you are destroying the flag by cutting it and eating it, digesting it, and then stuffting it out.
