Author Topic: Why do people commit Self Delete?  (Read 16599 times)

We've been getting an alarming amount of Self Delete threads lately, and it's been rather unsettling. A question that always bothers me is "why?"

I'm pretty sure that everyone here knows it's a permanent solution to what is usually a temporary problem. But it still makes me wonder why, in this day and age, are we so quick to just give up our lives because of a problem that can be dealt with or even fixed? Why is it so hard to move on after stuff happens? People die, not everyone loves you, and stuff generally doesn't go your way. It's not because everyone hates you, it's because life is pretty much a giant competition without end. And even if everyone does hate you, like it seems to be the case with some forumers here, it can be dealt with by moving on, or ignoring those that dislike you.

I feel bad for doing this, but lets use Thorfin as an example. He lost a family member, but he still had family, he still had friends, and he still had a future ahead of him. He was even close to completing some life goals, but decided to cut everything short. Why couldn't he just move past the pain? Why couldn't he help himself, when all of his friends and family was trying to help him? Why give your misery to everyone else? Why not honor the dead by being successful in spite of crippling depression? Why give up?

I personally find Self Delete to be one of the biggest disappointments that someone can do. Rather than even try or continue trying to make something out of their life, they just give up and end it all. Most Self Delete is purposeless, only being done out of sadness. A sacrifice would be honorable, alongside martyrdom, but making your own future meaningless is just loving stupid. I really can't find a way to describe Self Delete as something other than stupid. If you want your life to end, at the very least make sure people remember your death in good regards, rather than pure depression.

Discuss or whatever, sorry in advance if I make some people mad.

-reserved for future use-

First of all, ignore all of Refticus' posts.

People with depression clearly doesn't want to kill themselfs, but end the pain that lies on them.

Depression is much more complex than 'a bad thing happened to you and you got frustrated and killed yourself'. It feels like you are trapped in a pit and nothing you do you will make a difference. You feel like you just can't get happy and everything you do is meaningless. You don't see a point to things you once enjoyed and you mainly just feel sadness from recent events or a lack of success. People feel like things will never get better and think that sort of life isn't worth living.

That's an offensively simplistic view of it.

Having family/friends close to you really don't mean much. Yes, they can help you. can. but depression makes it all harder. you want to improve, but depression is like an invisible obstacle. it stops you from expressing yourself, asking for help, and etc. after some X time, you start believing that nothing you do will ever improve, because there's no solution.

because people are sensitive, little snowflakes, that they jump to the conclusion that not getting a gumball at the candy shop is worth killing yourself or running away.

To be or not to be? That's the question.

it's not a temporary problem in their eyes

so unfortunately when they make their choices, it's either a lifetime of pain/worthlessness or just a few more moments

I've decided that if I'm going to try to kill myself, it would be joining the military
at least there I could do something useful beforehand

Most people who are suicidal don't see any hope of ever resolving their problems, and basically are completely blind to their future. The only 'light' they see is basically that of 'freeing' themselves from the desperation/suffering that they're going through by ending their life.

And you can rightfully forget off.

Depression.

Self Delete is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

To be or not to be? That's the question.
This actually fits in pretty nicely.

i really hope to god you're joking

Some people kill themselves because there is no real reason to continue in their minds. Others do it because they can't handle the constant pain and have convinced themselves its better to not to be. There is no set reason as to why, and its different from person to person.

This actually fits in pretty nicely.
probably because that quote is literally about Self Delete

Either you're actually serious and really think that, or you're baiting. I'm gonna go with the latter.

probably because that quote is literally about Self Delete
But didn't Hamlet say that after knowing who was the murderer of Hamlet?
