What is it?
Quote from: wikipedia
Trove is an massively multiplayer online role-playing game Sandbox video game developed and published by Trion Worlds. The game was released on Microsoft Windows on July 9, 2015.
The gameplay of Trove is similar to Minecraft, but is also an MMORPG Sandbox.

Players assume the role of one of multiple classes each with different play styles and abilities. After a brief tutorial players arrive in a central area called the 'Hub' In this area players can access Portals which act as access points to different in game worlds each one tailored for a specific stage of progression. Each portal requires a minimum level to enter which gets higher per portal, allowing for progression from easier worlds to harder worlds as the player gains in level. Each world gets progressively harder but rewards higher levels of experience and better loot/resources. Each portal is of a specific color which is designed to indicate the quality of the 'loot' which can be most commonly located there, although there is a small chance that loot of a higher quality will be found. The exception to this is the higher level Red portals which predominantly drop Legendary (orange) quality loot but have a higher chance to drop loot of relic (red), resplendent (rainbow) or shadow (dark purple) quality as well. Higher Level Red portals have a better chance for to drop the rarer loot types.

Classes
Before venturing into the Multiverse you'll need a warm, cube-like body to withstand the rigor of life without curves. Play and transform your player, whether you choose to be adventure as a gallant Knight, sharp-shooting Gunslinger, or as one (or all!) of the many Classes coming to Trove in the weeks and months to come.

The Knight is a durable, armored fighter that wades fearlessly into melee combat. Charge your enemies to close distance, but if things get messy, your ultimate will restore your health and let you shrug off blows with ease.
The Dracolyte is a fire mage who commands the might of dragons. Use your flamethrower to charge up your dragonling familiar and if you get into trouble, use your ultimate to transform into a powerful dragon
The Neon Ninja isElusive and deadly, the Neon Ninja slices and dices enemies when they least expect it. Backflip into stealth and surprise your enemies with thrown shuriken, and then obliterate them with the forbidden Final Technique.
The Candy Barbarian is A mighty warrior with a lust for battle that is only matched by a hunger for sweet treats. Leap into the fight, then beseech your patron deity Eis-Crom to hurl one of his fabled thundercones down upon the heads of your enemies.
The adventurer
Boomarangers are skilled with both bow and sword. Bomb your way through bedrock and stun any enemies you find with your trusty boomarang! When things get to hairy or scary, lob a Mysterious Urn into the fray!
The Tomb Raiser
The unlife of the party! Animate minions, then heal them and damage enemies with your basic attack's piercing beam. Enhance your attack and defence with Banshee's Boon, and combine your Bonetourage into a Grave Goliath!
The Gunslinger is an eagle-eyed ranged fighter who blasts enemies with dual pistols. Light up foes with a well-aimed charged shot, then use your ultimate to gun them down in a hail of energy bullets.
The Fae Trickster specializes in avoiding damage while dishing it out. Use blink to leave behind an illusion that takes the hits for you, while you deal massive damage with your charged up attack..
The Ice Sage is a cryptic spellcaster with an unerring sense of everything cool. Chill foes with magical crystals and summon deadly falling icicles, then use your ultimate to freeze enemies solid and leave them helpless.
Shadow Hunters destroy evil wherever it may hide. Heed the Dark Whispers of your captured shadow, pick off distant enemies with a charged Radiant Arrow, and trap them with Sun Snares when they get close.
The Pirate Captain is A salty sea dog with a love for explosions and the high seas. Blast your foes with Plunderbuss for doubloons to upgrade your First Mate's cannon, bait foes with Pretend Pirate, and unleash Man o' War for a fiery finish!

The words "free" and "MMORPG" being used together to describe a game are putting me a little on edge, how are the developers making money from it?

DLC and in-game purchases no doubt

it looks like cube world except pay2win

You pay for the classes and pets and I'm pretty sure the ability to fly and stuff. I could be mistaken about the last one.
Also cosmetics, obviously.

Except, y'know, it actually loving exists.
Not defending Trove, I think it's trash, but regardless, why compare it to that piece of dev-abandoned stuff.

You pay for convenience, everything excluding cosmetics/chaos boxes(cheap boxes with very little chance of anything good, and the good things are usually mounts/wings) can be obtained through playing the game. You can unlock classes/the ability to fly/pets/dragons/etc through just playing the game.

yeah good point. cube world is just a scam, not an actual game

i've played for 16 hours and i'm basically sitting at level 13 on both characters because dungeons become stuff xp and i don't have 5 hours of my day to grind for shadow keys (unless im willing to buy them!!!!!!!!!!!)

Shadow arenas don't give good exp either lol. They're to have a solid chance at good gear.

well what actually gives xp besides doing 20 dungeons to get half a level?

Unfortunately that's pretty much all there is to it. I wouldn't know, when I played I didn't play with the goal of just maxing out characters, there are other things to do. I usually leveled through trying to get gear rather than actually trying to level. The game lacks unique ways of leveling at the moment though, raids it seems are on their agenda though.

I got a shadow item, yay!

want to have fun in the game? Give us your wallet.

yeah once you get to the uber ranks it's really just an unbearable grind
