Author Topic: Wanting to build a 12' Catboat  (Read 1777 times)

Since last year, me and my friends have been saving up money for a budget, the deal was a fourth of all of our income would go to it (however, its only 4 people). Since around July of last year, we have made nearly 1500. I believe this is way more than enough for this project, however we have decided to use Cedar for the majority of it. I do not know how much cedar will cost for a 12 foot hull and 13 foot mast. I also have no idea on the cost of a sail.

About 2 months ago, I started planning it out. I would prefer a single-sail Gaff rig, a Barn door rudder, and try to keep power tools out of construction. I want to experience minor shipbuilding like it was back in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Problem is, I barely have any experience with sailing boats, last time I rode one I was 10. I do however have experience with boats, especially ocean-going skiffs. I also have no experience whatsoever with boat-building. I doubt I can find any help here regarding this, but any tips for construction would be greatly appreciated.

The info in a list:

The budget is $1500
Majoricaly Cedar (if the budget allows it)
12' long hull
13' tall mast
ability to fit 2 people
gaff-rig
no motorization whatsoever

Why do you want to build a boat is a good start

Fill the bottom with holes to reduce weight and increase speed

No don't

Just completely take it out :cookieMonster:

so he can be a somalian pirate

also paint it red, red wonz go fasta

so he can be a somalian pirate
i had a dream about somalian pirates last night lmao

Can we see your drawing of the boat?

also paint it red, red wonz go fasta

i thought it was the racially diverse black paint that makes things faster

I dont have a drawing yet that is actually an accurate scale and representation, I just know the basic height and length I want it to be.

You know, it took a really long time for people to be able to make reliable ocean-going craft. Reinventing the wheel is a phrase for a reason.
Best of luck, but even if you do make a functional, watertight boat, you're probably going to have a really awful time getting about.

this is false red has the longest wavelenght of all the colors which means it takes longer for the light to reach you
you would want violet as a color since that has the shortest wavelength

this is not an unusual thing
people build boats all the time
it's not like it requires some kind of magic fairy dust

as fox typed up, it isnt difficult to replicate something and make it slightly different.
they've been around since the early 1800s at the latest with thousands of made worldwide for recreation to sustanance by means of fishing.

actually you would want to paint it with gamma rays since they have the shortest wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation

Well you should just not paint it since the paint would add a tiny amount of weight and take a tiny bit of aerodynamics off.
