at least earthbound let you attack immediately, i know the earthbound battle system is bland and flawed in ways as well

i didn't find off to be surreal at all
maybe i just play too many games that'd count as surreal (yume nikki and all games styled like that come to mind)
that said i found the plot was pretty loving obvious by the end
it wasn't really that subtle.
the whole purifying thing being misleading though was kind of interesting in my opinion

in any case yes the combat was loving painfully dull
