Non-Steam allows for switching alts, if you have any.
I use steam version for everything, and non-steam for hosting dedicated, switching alts is also a good idea.

non-steam because the directory is easier to get to

Steam version on OS X can't create files in unexistant folders. It creates the new folder in the user root and the file is never created. On OS X if you have any choice unlike me use non-steam.

I'm basically stuck to windowed minimum-shader non-steam whenever I play

maybe at first but if you make a shortcut it becomes a non-issue

i have a shortcut to my bl folder inside my steam folderon the desktop

Using steam to run blockland is so old fashioned, everyone uses gasoline now!

(Bad steam engine pun)

The only benefit to steam blockland is you get to see how many hours of your life you've wasted on Blockland. Having a key or set of keys is infinitely more useful.

steam has a friends list, and you can also message them on it.

I can see how this could be true if you are someone who hoats dedicated serbers using spare keys, but other than that the onky other "advantage" is being able to use alts/sockpuppets to evade key revokes and server bans, which is generally frownable.

I have Blockland on Steam, but I don't run it through Steam. I was going to say this is out of force of habit, but that isn't quite true:

I've always played Blockland in a window, so I can access my Steam friends regardless.

I don't want people to see me going in-game because I'm often testing vehicles, so I'm closing and opening Blockland many times.

There is literally no difference with the game itself. Non-steam version has steam functionality, steam version has non-steam functionality.
The only difference between buying it on steam and buying it from BL is that you get an actual key if you didn't buy it on steam, which allows you to play it with both steam and non-steam functionality.

Or host a dedicated server properly without some workaround that may not even work on a remote server.
