Russia forms CSTO, the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
Serbia, Afghanistan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan are invited to join the organization.
Everyone except Afghanistan accepts. Yugoslavia seems a little on the fence, but joins anyways. Turkmenistan and the rest of the countries in the Caucasus region request to join as well.
The automakers within the U.S. begin transitioning to the metric system and the U.S. will fully transition to the metric system by 2000. Some U.S. automakers are now actually re-examining their assembly lines whenever a defect keeps showing up in a car, stopping production to fix the issue. u.s. companies are already transitioning to the international system of units to address inefficiencies in exporting their products to other countries. the u.s. customary system will remain for servicing older products. a special congressional committee is started to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of switching to the metric system in response to the petition, though the government is already negotiating with companies to voluntarily switch to SI units.

I'm just going to assume Russia accepts the other countries into the CSTO, mostly because I don't want to have to open paint.net again to add a whopping 3 countries and then upload, etc.
