Author Topic: Custom mod commissions  (Read 9946 times)

I think it'd be a pretty bad idea to commission a large scale mod like that from someone who isn't already passionate about working on it to begin with. If you crowdfund it, you're gonna have a hard time nailing down the design specifications in the first place. With kickstarter, the developer also sets the specifications and has the motivation to work on it, but with a commission, you'd need the backers to agree on every detail ahead of time. Then once the mod is released, people are still gonna want to see new features added in. Some people will want it to support new jobs for differently themed CityRPs, people may want certain options added in to tweak the gameplay on their servers, and every once in a while someone will come along pitching a major new feature that a few users will want added in. But then what? Do you start a crowdfunding campaign for a new version, or do you hold Pecon responsible for long term maintenance? Sure bug fixes would be expected, and if you asked nicely you could probably get a couple small updates with some new functions, but bigger features would mean another commission.

You could probably solve a few of these issues if you had someone in the middle to manage the crowdfunding and write the specs ahead of time, working with Pecon to keep the cost from outpacing the amount of money coming in, but that doesn't determine where the line is drawn for what kind of long term development Pecon remains responsible for, and also introduces some other questions, like "do the backers have the right to ask for those small tweaks, or do they have to go through the same middle-man," "is the person who managed the crowdfunding at all responsible for its long term maintenance," or "can someone commission major features be added on to the CityRP, then keep that as their own private branch of the mod without releasing it?"

I think getting the mod made this way would be any number of disasters waiting to happen.

Iban and Jookia(?) made a stuffty 'disaster' of a mod what, like, half a decade ago? And neither have touched it since? Yet people still use it constantly. Every time a new CityRPG is hosted, there's some sort of new innovation. Iban never programmed the economy or drug systems, and now they're basically the staple for CityRPGs everywhere. When people get a hold of it, they will tweak it themselves to suit their needs, just like they did with Iban's.

If we don't legitimately pay somebody $100 to do it, it's never going to get fixed and I'm almost 100% certain of that. Nobody is asking Pecon to dedicate his entire life to the commission for the rest of his days, but nobody has the skill to or even wants to do the heavy lifting. I think a commission is the perfect excuse for it.

Visolator is releasing his mod once he finishes it?

I highly doubt it will be much better than the current versions in circulation

Doubt it. Please explain how it would be related to the other CityRPGs.

Though the edits you are making are moving in the right direction and I encourage you to release it, it's still exactly the same thing we've been playing forever. Minor tweaks won't fix the game-breaking flaws at the fundamental level. It's a design error.

My question is still unanswered

I agree with Jetz, a project of that scale needs more than commission as a motivator.

My question is still unanswered

You are asking me why your Iban edit is the same thing as other Iban edits

It is not an iban edit. It was written from scratch.

If you read the cityrpg topic it explains that it is made from scratch and there's even a post full of features; even if you didn't read the topic please don't jump to conclusions thinking every server is using the same mod.

I've started BlockCity from scratch, and has a lot of progress. There are still things that need to be done before it comes to the public
This is why you should know what you're talking about before you talk about it.

Either way Visolator, I think to answer your question, your mod is similar to other CityRPG's simply because many other people have made their own mod from scratch as well. (Iban, Jasa, etc) It's not like it's something extremely new. Also, things you incorporated into your mod are also things that were incorporated into other City RPG's. The only real difference I can see is that it's better tweaked to where it actually makes logical sense this time around. If you wanted it to be unrelated or something completely new, you would have to make something very different than the other City RPG's. Maybe even a LOT more advanced.

A better question that is directed towards you is, how is it not related exactly?

I do agree that my mod is related to other CityRPGs, but it is not the exact. I also agree that this entire mod is not anything new, but it would be better to have something different in the mod. The entire code is completely different, but also there are new features and fixed features. Are there any topics for my CityRPG to add suggestions that would make it more different? I have requested these kind of suggestions before in my topic but no one really payed attention to it.
