WHAT IS TRIBUTARY?

Tributary is hybrid RP(G) where every person plays as their own character, competing or cooperating with other players at the dawn of the Bronze Age and some millennia after an ice age.  A number of people have recently migrated through thick, icy mountains to arrive at a glacial rift valley, an oasis of life created by receding glaciers.  Characters are permitted freely to create their own tribes and factions and settle down where they want, however, only if dangerous wildlife or hostile people allow you to.

THE MAP
The longest stretch of space from one end of the valley to another is about 13 miles.

TIME & WEATHER

Day 6, Early Summer

This early summer night, the sky contains only a few sparse clouds and dancing lights.  The weather is warm, and today is the Summer Solstice.

3 irl day
= 1 sim day, where the cycle is Morning, Afternoon, Night, and repeat.
but also
2 irl weeks = 1 sim season

(Simulated days are mandated so that RP would not be over-accelerated, but seasons are kept moving so that it wouldn't take literally 6 months to change seasons.)

During the middle of each season:
Spring  — Sunrise: 6am, Sunset: 6pm
Summer — Sunrise: 2am, Sunset: 10pm
Autumn — Sunrise: 6am, Sunset: 6pm
Winter — Sunrise: 10am, Sunset: 2pm

HOW DO YOU PLAY ?

1.     Fill out the following application  (Areas with an asterisk* are required.  You may deviate from this application or format it how you wish so long as the required information is listed.  If you are accepted, you may alter this freely to your preferred format.):
Code: [Select]
Name:  [name*]
love:  [male/female*]
Skills:  (assign 5 points*)
 • Gathering:  [split skill 1*]
 • Crafting:  [split skill 2*]
 • Harvesting:  [split skill 3*]
 • Fighting (Hunting/Combat):  [split skill 4*]
Personality:  [personality]
Group:  [faction/tribe]
Physical Appearance:  [physical appearance (picture and/or description)]
2.     If/when accepted, choose where you start.  If your highest stat is Gathering, you get a Stone Axe.  If your highest stat is Crafting, you get a Wooden Mallet.  If your highest stat is Harvesting, you get a Flint Scythe.  If your highest stat is Fighting, you get a Flint Knife.  If you have evenly-matched stats, choose ONE tool or weapon from among those four.  Other than the geography of the land, you know nothing else except for what you discover yourselves.  You will discover all kinds of plants or animals that could either help you or kill you.  I (or anyone who may join to moderate, if it comes to that point) will be sworn not to participate as competitive players since this would give us an unfair advantage.
3.     Survive.  Only time will tell what is the best method for doing this.  A tested and true method is generally "the more the merrier."

RULES

  • Do not powergame, ass-pull or metagame.
  • You can form tribes if you wish, though the tribe has a system in which the players decide who leads, who does what, etc.  Moderators are not permitted to intervene.
  • Rules can be added or removed, and you will be notified when a change is made.
  • Do not leave the area via the impassible mountains, glaciers, or the rivers.  It will be RP'd that you die in a hostile environment if you do.  (Added 11/23 @ 11:48 PM, PST)
  • If given the opportunity to name something, name it appropriately, please.  Do not name something after something in real life, such as "Americaland" or "Blocklanders."  (Added 11/23 @ 11:50 PM, PST)
  • You can only play as a human.  (Added 11/24 @ 5:00 PM PST)
  • If you do not act as your player, your player will act as if idling about.  If you wish to go on a hiatus, you must have a tent pitched in a safe location and you must rest there.  (Added 11/26 @ 10:45 PM PST)
  • Stasis must be requested in advance, and will not be retroactively applied as of any incident occurring before the time this rule was created at December 1, 2015, at 12:26 am PST.  Do not use stasis as a means to simply escape danger.  This will incur a harsh karmic penalty or a ban.
  • If you go inactive, you will continue your current task for one time segment, then go idle.  (Added 12/07)

THE SYSTEM

Death:     When you die, it's not permanent, but you will be put out of commission for 3 days irl.  After this time expires, you will respawn back at your tribe's main tent (if you are a part of a tribe that has one) or at a random point in the wilderness.
Character Conditions:     If your character has some kind of condition, such as bleeding, poisoning, sickness, etc., the conditions and the ailments will be described.
Hunger & Thirst:     Your hunger will naturally drop by 50 every day  Your thirst will naturally drop by 100 every day.
Skill Levels:  Your skills will be raised based on the amount of work that you do.  Once you get to level 5 in a skill, you can specialize, allowing you to add an additional free skill point in an area of your choice.  Max level is 25.  If you die, and your karma strips you of skill points, you will be more likely to retain your last area of specialization, and level points in this area will have a higher chance of being spared.  As you get better at your skill, you will be capable of more things.  To see the full specialization tree, click HERE.  The center, unspecialized line requires you to meet the level requirements in all of the skill categories.
Karma:     Okay, this part is important.  Everyone starts with 0 karma with every life.  This ranges from -100 to 100.  If you conduct yourself well, your karma will raise; if you conduct yourself with disgrace and dishonor, your karma will suffer.  Once you die, karma decides how much you will be able to retain when you respawn.  Spawnkilling will destroy your karma; do not do it.
Flora & Fauna:     The flora and fauna of this valley are not known yet.  As you discover things, you will learn how to identify things and find out what they do.
Political:     You as the player are free to create whatever system you want in the game.  Players may or may not agree with you, but that's the fun of it.  Create alliances, conduct trade, make enemies and go to war, all of this is up to the player to choose.
Culture:     In your societies, developing a culture may help to aid your group in solidifying it, as well as potentially manipulating the group's karma.
Reproduction:     I have not thought this one out yet entirely, but perhaps you would like to suggest something?

Accepted.  Where would you like to start?

Over here looks good. Maybe I'll draw my character if I've got time tomorrow.

Alright, sounds good.  I updated the OP and subsequent post with further information.  Last updated:  11/24, 2:15 AM PST.

Hocef hears the sound of beads and bones rattling a distance behind her in the wind, and to her surprise, she sees a man sitting atop a stack of large rocks with a cane bedecked in beads and fragments of bones.  He seems to be wearing a white hood with a eagle's face on the top.  He appears to be smoking a long pipe as he stares off to the north.

Accepted.  You get a flint knife.

Loec, upon observing his new surroundings, notices a pile of logs in the river and a few brown creatures moving the logs about.

«Loec has discovered the Burogi.  Ψ»

A gust of cold wind blows past Hocef, indicating that the next night will be a cold one.  The same wind reaches Loec a few minutes later.  As Hocef is distracted, she looks to the mountains, seeing an intense snowpack.  When she turns her attention back to where the man was, he is no longer there.

Also as far as land and water features go, you as players are allowed to name things yourselves.  Just observe rule 5, and y'all good.
« Last Edit: November 24, 2015, 03:57:12 PM by SWAT One »

Hocef feels a sense of relief that the strange man had disappeared, despite the inexplicable reason for his disappearance. She decides it was just a hallucination based from her fear of this new place or her lack of company. But perhaps she will find others here, others who hopefully look less unusual. She looks across the plains to see if she can see anything that could gathered or a place to stay warm.

She looks across the plains to see if she can see anything that could gathered or a place to stay warm.
Deeper into the valley, she sees a thinly-forested area, with lots of trees, and thicker forested area and a lake further away.  Toward the rim, she sees a rocky area with some huge cave entrances.  An eagle flies overhead in the direction of the lake.

The sun begins to move lower in the sky.
« Last Edit: November 24, 2015, 06:19:11 PM by SWAT One »

Hocef decides to go closer to the forest and find something she can use for food before the sun sets.

-I'll pause here and wait for Miko to catch up-

Loec watches the strange creatures in awe for hours, eventually deciding not to mess with them. He does, however, begin making his way towards the river. A water source is his main focus at the moment. After taking a few drinks, he begins to survey the nearby area, hoping to find an adequate source of warmth for the night.

Hocef notices a few bushes with larger red berries on them, and also notices what could be animal tracks further into the wood.

A water source is his main focus at the moment. After taking a few drinks, he begins to survey the nearby area, hoping to find an adequate source of warmth for the night.
Loec feels refreshed by the water.  It is almost entirely clear glacial water.  He looks downstream to see a thinly-wooded forest along the river, and sees a few grazing animals drinking from the stream.  Because they are about a half mile away, he cannot make out what they look like.  They walk away deeper into the forest away from view.

Red. Red isn't always a safe color. Hocef decides to take a small bite into this possible food source to check it's safety. Hocef wonders if the animal that made the tracks might eat these.

Hocef decides to take a small bite into this possible food source to check it's safety.
Hocef discovers that the flavor is tart, although not exactly bitter.  They're probably not in season, but they don't appear to have taken any measurable effect.
