What is Super Mario Maker?

SMM is a title for the WiiU released initially on September 10th, 2015. The game is basically a level editor with minigames for the Mario franchise, or a streamlined way to make and play ROM hacks. Players can finish and rate other people's courses, set world records on other courses, create their own stages using nearly every element found in 4 key Mario games: The original Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, or New Super Mario Bros WiiU, allowing for many different items, styles, enemies, and environments across the many games. Players can also play minigames such as 10 Mario Challenge, in which players are given 8 lives to clear 10 developer made custom levels, or small minigames such as fly swatting, a self explanatory game that carries over from Mario Paint on the SNES. It can be found at local retailers or on the Nintendo eShop.

Are there amiibos?

Currently there are only two, both of which serve the same function. The Mario Bros 30th Anniversary amiibo, which upon usage gives the player a mega mushroom much like the one found in New Super Mario Bros. This mushroom allows players to smash through blocks and adds a nostalgic TV filter over the screen (the mushroom is in typical NES style).

What if I don't have ideas?

Each copy of the game comes with a booklet which features ideas and scenarios from the developers, and for a short period at the end of the book, some original notes Miyamoto made when designing levels for Super Mario Bros.

With the amount of content this game allows you to build with, it's hard to not have ideas. Make an incredibly challenging level, use the mystery mushroom to disguise yourself as unlocked characters (ranging from Excitebike's Biker to a trampoline), recreate a game or romhack entirely, play music with custom note blocks, add cheesy sound/visual effects, and so much more.

Okay, how do I start?

RUN ON SENTENCE WARNING

Once the main menu opens up (after the yellow screen showing a random act happening to Mario depending on the day and the game shouts its name at you), players are given the option to either make or play levels. If choosing to make a level, it drops the player into the preset that was displayed in the background, and from there the player can reset it and build from scratch or add onto it from there on. At first the game may seem empty, but more assets are unlocked in 15 minute intervals which allow for more editing. These include atmosphere (Underwater stages, ghost houses, castles, etc), game style (Mario 3 appearance and songs vs Mario World appearance and songs), enemies (Boot Goomba, Chomp Chomp, BOWSER), and sound effects (Bowser's theme song, punching sounds, and your own recorded ones).

so do i have to just sit in the level editor for a really long time to unlock all the items??

its annoying but it should work

i mean it comes with items already but for mario 3 and stuff you have to wait it out and use what you already have

There is already a thread.

There is already a thread.

i didnt know that
mainly because its on the 8th page

I try to make bullet hell-like levels but all I got are the Lakota and the spiny koopas.

I've been making a level every day and people really like them
Wii U was hogged yesterday though so I couldn't

If you don't want to deal with the delivery BS, do what I did and richard around in the editor until you get the message saying that the delivery is coming, exit the game and set the clock forward, go back into the game and you will unlock some stuff. Repeat until you get everything.

"Anyone can play it,"
liar I don't have a Wii U.

Wii U is loving awesome
connects to your tv
has basically everything I need to be a lazy bum
people can use TV while I'm on the Wii U C::

What I did was make/play a stage with what i already had and occasionally spamming blocks worked as well. It might go by building but im not sure.

Joe's stage is now in the op!

I think it would be more productive to just put my entire profile in the OP.

I have 10 stages so far.

To be honest, I hate the new thing where worlds considered bad are deleted. My brother had a really hard level that was pretty neat, it had a low completion rate and nobody really starred it, and as a result it was deleted from the server.
