If you want, I could give you the server files to host my MinimalMods2 pack. It has quite a bit of good mods in it.
I could also give the files for the original mod pack.
Heck, I could even make a mod pack specifically for the server. Just give me a list of mods (including mods required for other mods to work) and I'll get to work.

It's appreciated but I'm waiting for mods to update to 1.8 at minimum, and even then I'd still want some simple mods, nothing particularly large

I've never heard of that but the closest it sounds to is forge micro blocks

That sounds like Forge Microblocks, but Chisels and Bits is more powerful and updated to 1.9
