But game mechanics are entirely different in third person shooters. There, you usually have som kind off crosshair or auto aiming functionality, and everybody else plays with the same limitations.
Well said.

But some people dont need a dot on screen to aim properly :P

And in close range you can see people behind you.

Don't need a dot to aim properly? Sir, you NEED a crosshair. Or at least a gun sight or scope. When people fight wars, gun designers don't throw men out to get shot at without some method of increasing their chances of killing the enemy. Shooting wildly with a rapid fire gun will give you a vague idea of where your bullets are going, but with a steady hand and a scope, one shot is all it takes. Saying you 'don't need a dot' is like saying 'I don't use a spoon when eating cereal'. Sure, it can be done, it's just pointless.

Macroing: 3rd Person
- I find it easier to see what I'm doing this way and I get a view of the whole build.
Building: 3rd Person
- Same reason as Macroing.
DM: 1st Person
- This one is quite obvious. Hard to aim with 3rd person.
Driving: 3rd Person
- Easier to see where I'm going and the way the wheels are turned.
Flying: neither
- I suck too much at flying to even attempt.
Ninja Stuff and Challenges: 3rd Person most of the time, sometimes 1st Person
- Depends on the situation.

I'd say both types of views are appropriate for certain times, you cannot state which one is better.
I lol'd at Jervan's reply, as well as Sniff's. Well said.

2nd person
that is a neer by person handicap or sky view it sucks balls the best example is pokemon

from this info, I hereby submit that you are a handicap.

2nd person view has never been done, but since second person is directed at someone as if you were talking to them rather than talking to someone else about them, It would probably be looking at yourself, or something. No one knows.

I alternate between the two constantly in everything I do.

In fairness, actually replying to the original question. I alternate, much like everybody else does. If you don't alternate, you are one strange individual who doesnt understand the tools laid out before him. Or you just don't know how to switch views. :D

1st person - building
3rd person - dm

well, i like the replies, but now im curious about the confusing and mysterious 2nd person view.

In reference to a shooter:
1st person is eye view, with the crosshair showing and stuff
3rd person is a camera behind and slightly above you.
2nd person... is the guy getting shot. :3

In literature, 1st person is the one who the story focuses around, 3rd person is a bystander not involved, but witnessing most of the story (enough to tell you details), and 2nd person is the non-focal character who gets acted upon. In a shooter, that'd be the guy getting shot. :cookieMonster:

Explanation over.

Macroing: 3rd Person
SimpleBuilding: 1st Person and sometimes 3rd Person
trickyBuilding: 3rd Person
DM: 1st Person
Driving: 3rd Person
Flying: 1st Person
Ninja Stuff and Challenges: 3rd Person most of the time, sometimes 1st Person
Same. What do i vote?

I alternate between the two constantly in everything I do.
Me too.. it sometimes drives me crazy how much I need to do it.

Who said anything about guns? O_o

The thing in my mind was actually spears....

And I don't use a spoon to eat cereal... I just drink it from the bowl like a cup... faster anyways...

I don't need no crosshair! Ask anybody that has seen me DM, I kill folk spectacularly without one!

Well thats easy with a spear/sword. lets see you get a headshot in 3rd person.

Are you sure you should be sitting there?
Your master might not be happy.

1st person:Looking as if you were them
3rd Person: Looking from behind them
2nd Person would be if you press F in 3rd person, or if your camera was right above them. Or when you die and you shows your face?

I abuse the ability to look around walls in 3rd, but otherwise im usually first.

Heh, yeah.
