The only reason Western Europe can afford to pay for their fancy social welfare (at the expense of 35-60% tax rates on the middle class ofc) is due to being part of NATO. The US defense budget is in essence theirs; if stuff hits the fan, the US has an obligation to defend them. That's how they are able to spend so little on defense.

These social welfare systems will inevitably collapse anyway, the massive influx of people drawing money from the system is only accelerating the process. Eventually you run out of other people's money to spend, especially in the case of massive numbers of unemployed north African economic migrants suddenly putting additional strain on the taxpayer funds.

The social safety net is becoming a hammock for these people.
