reddit and 4chan have a habit of electing themselves vigilante detectives, thinking they're saving the world from corruption and uncovering some great secrets to fuel their hero complex when really all they're doing is harassing innocent people with unsubstantiated claims and taking the slightest coincidence and running with it. it's momentum-based, meaning they'll accept pretty much anything as evidence as long as it perpetuates the illusion that they are garnering more and more evidence and getting closer to uncovering some grand conspiracy, and when they stop coming up with coincidences to loosely connect, it'll end up the empty shell of a stuff-flinging, ego-stroking campaign.

Something being unproven implies falsehood In this context. Treating something unproven as true is unwise. This is why people are searching for quantifiable evidence to support their theory, not arguing on a forum about how it's supposedly dumb that something being unproven automatically means it's false.

Yes I support the presumption of innocence because I'm not mentally handicapped.
It's not a 'burden of proof' argument. You can't criticize someone's suggestion as completely false and then back it up with a source that says it might not be false lmao. I feel like people are so quick to stuff out Snopes articles relevant to the discussion that they're not actually reading them.

You definitely can, however, when the source claims it's hearsay, not "It might not be false". Somebody's suggestion means nothing when the only thing backing it up might be hearsay, and trying to suggest that using the article as a source is wrong because it's allegedly biased is also a fallacy.

Yeah but nobody's really citing the 'hearsay' as their source, it was juxtaposed it with several other items to construct an argument in favor of the 'hearsay' being true, and it was dismissed a snopes link that didn't actually provide any evidence in either direction lol
